The generations album

The dance, generation by generation

191 dancers with a sourced life, row by row from the pioneers to today’s maestros, oldest first. A teacher is named only where a source says so.

The pioneers

3 dancers

Tango is born in the 1880s in the arrabales and conventillos of Buenos Aires and Montevideo; by 1913 it is the rage of Paris.

The golden age

10 dancers

From 1935 the big orchestras play every weekend, and young men learn in prácticas before facing the club milongas.

The keepers

30 dancers

After 1955 the dance fades. A few kept dancing in downtown confiterías, and when the world came asking they became the teachers.

The revival

57 dancers

Tango Argentino puts the dance back on the world stage in 1983; the research groups of the 1990s take it apart and rebuild it.

Today’s maestros

86 dancers

Champions of the Mundial, first held in 2003, and the teachers of festivals on every continent.

Not yet dated

5 dancers

Their Record names no generation and no year of birth yet. They move to their row once a source dates them.
