Tango and São Paulo

Chapter 1 of 2 · 1915–2016

Gardel in São Paulo

The Razzano-Gardel duo on tour in Brazil, 1915.

Centro · Bela Vista

In the second half of 1915 the duo Gardel-Razzano travelled to Brazil to perform in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where Gardel met the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso.1

The tour was with the Compañía Dramática Rioplatense, led by Elías Alippi, in which the duo gave the closing number.2 The company's appearances in São Paulo and Rio did not overcome the language barrier, though the Brazilian press praised the duo.2

In 1923, on a trip to Spain, the duo also stopped to perform in Santos.1
