Tango and Athens

Chapter 1 of 2 · 1900–1989

Greek tangos

Operettas in 1914, a hundred tangos a year between the wars.

Plaka · Psyrri

The tango reached Greece in the same period as the rest of Europe.1 Already in 1914 the operettas "Polemos en Polemo" by Spyros Samaras and "Sta Parapigmata" by Theofrastos Sakellaridis contained Greek tangos.1

In interwar Greece more than a hundred tangos were written every year, by composers such as Kostas Giannidis, Attik and Michalis Sougioul, sung by Sofia Vembo, Danai Stratigopoulou, Kakia Mendri and Nikos Gounaris, above all in the 1950s.1
