Dag Stenvoll y Michael Lavocah con Carlos Puente (in the chat, collector who compiled the Euro Record CDs) · 10 de feb de 2021 · 3:15:28
Dag Stenvoll and Michael Lavocah call 1938 explosive: one of the first great years for dance music, with D'Arienzo at his peak and the war in Europe approaching. Biagi is let go by D'Arienzo in June and has his own orchestra recording by mid-August on rival label Odeon, while D'Arienzo carries on with Juan Polito at the piano. Troilo and Lucio Demare make their first recordings, but the label system (RCA Victor and Odeon the only two left after the Depression) gives new bands one disc and then silence for three years. Around July the public turns from instrumentals towards vocal tangos with an estribillo, the shift visible in the Canaro and Fresedo discographies. Jazz is not dead: Harry Roy's British band tours Buenos Aires and scandalizes tango lovers with a rumba La cumparsita. The show leans on the danceable, with detours into soloists (Corsini, Magaldi, Mercedes Simone) and the advanced, non-selling end (Laurenz, Troilo, Demare).

Biagi split from D'Arienzo in 1938, a break Lavocah thinks Biagi expected, and immediately started his own orchestra.
1938 brings the first recordings of Demare and Troilo, who begins to integrate the cerebral ideas of De Caro's school into the dancing mainstream.
The Harry Roy jazz orchestra, then the best paid jazz band in the world, travelled to Buenos Aires in April 1938 on the Alcántara and was contracted by Radio Belgrano, which spent two thirds of its annual budget on the fee; their rumba La cumparsita scandalized tango lovers.
D'Arienzo recorded 14 numbers with Biagi at the piano through June 1938, then 14 more with Juan Polito in the second half of the year.
The public taste shifts from instrumentals to vocal tangos around July 1938 (visible in the Canaro and Fresedo discographies), still with a short estribillo sung by the orchestra's singer.
