Contents

The book is in three parts. Part 1, The Sound (chapters 1–6), covers the first orchestra of 1937 and its key players. Part 2, The Repertoire (chapters 7–35), follows the recordings in date order from 1938 to 1971 and ends with a chapter on Troilo in ten tangos. Part 3, The Man & the Myth (chapters 36–38), has a short biography. The appendices are Troilo on CD, a discography and the orchestra formations, followed by a bibliography, an index of titles and a glossary.

Approach and discography

Chapter 7 counts 485 recordings between 1938 and 1971. The total includes small-group recordings and two bandoneón duos with Astor Piazzolla as well as the orchestra's own sides. The chapter divides the orchestra's history into a dance era (1937–1949), a transition era (1950–1956) and a concert era (1957–1975), and says the book concentrates on 1938–1949. The discography in Appendix B gives an index number, a recording date and, where known, the arranger, with entries set under pianist headings.
