Alberto Podestá was born on 22 September 1924. [7] He moved to Buenos Aires with the support of Hugo del Carril, auditioned at the Paradise café and was hired by Miguel Caló, singing at the Singapur. [1] Carlos Di Sarli, whom he joined in 1942, gave him the name Alberto Podestá. [1]

His orchestral career also included the orchestras of Pedro Laurenz and Francini-Pontier. [1] [6] From 1951 he worked as a soloist. [1] He died in a care home in Buenos Aires on 9 December 2015 and was buried at Jardín de Paz in Hudson. [1]

History

Wikipedia places his move to Buenos Aires and his hiring by Miguel Caló in 1939. [1] The tango.info calendar lists him singing with Caló on 12 March 1941. [4]

In 1942 he joined Carlos Di Sarli, who gave him the name Alberto Podestá, and recorded Al compás del corazón and Nada with him. [1] The tango.info calendar lists him with Di Sarli on several dates in 1942, from 30 March to 21 December, and also lists him with Caló on 2 September 1942. [5] Sources therefore differ on whether his work with Caló ended when he joined Di Sarli in 1942. [1] [5]

According to Todotango, he joined Pedro Laurenz in 1943 and sang with that orchestra until 1945. [6] In 1945 he became the singer of the Francini-Pontier orchestra, performing at the Sans Souci and the Tibidabo cabaret, and recorded El hijo triste with Julio Sosa. [1]

In 1951 he started a solo career on Radio Splendid and sang at the Maipú Pigall cabaret. [1] In 1967 he moved to Chile, where he lived and worked until 1970. [1]

In 2007 he was named an illustrious citizen of Buenos Aires. [1] In 2008 he took part in the Café de los Maestros project, performing at the Teatro Colón. [1] In 2012 he recorded the album Alta gama with the guitar trio Las Bordonas. [2] In 2014 he celebrated his 90th birthday with a concert at the Usina del Arte. [3] He died in a Buenos Aires care home on 9 December 2015 and was buried at Jardín de Paz in Hudson. [1]

Podestá made his recording debut at 17 singing 'José el tango' with Caló in 1941, and by 19 had recorded roughly 50 tracks across three major orchestras (Caló, Di Sarli, Laurenz) — a rare singer who sounded equally good with all of them.

Single source

Podestá and Di Sarli's own singer Roberto Rufino both had reputations for changing orchestras often, but Podestá's greater maturity meant it never hurt his career the way it could have for the younger Rufino.

Single source

Podestá, 18, was singing with Caló at the Singapore Club when a waiter handed him a card from Di Sarli's agent mid-show; he gripped it so hard in his pocket it bent, and sang 'as never before' that night — Di Sarli hired him away.
