Bajofondo
Bajofondo is the Argentine-Uruguayan collective founded in the early 2000s by Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico. It produces contemporary Río de la Plata music that incorporates tango, candombe, milonga and electronic production techniques.[24][25]
Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico initiated the project around 2001 as a studio collaboration intended to give a contemporary electronic framework to the musical traditions of the Río de la Plata.[24][25] The first album, “Bajofondo Tango Club,” was released in 2002 and featured guest vocalists and instrumentalists including Jorge Drexler, Adriana Varela and Pablo Mainetti.[24] The record received a Premio Gardel for best electronic album and a Latin Grammy for best pop instrumental album.[24][25]
The core ensemble later stabilized around Santaolalla, Campodónico, Luciano Supervielle, Martín Ferrés (bandoneon), Javier Casalla (violin), Gabriel Casacuberta (bass), Adrián Sosa (drums) and Verónica Loza (visuals and vocals).[24] Subsequent albums—“Mar Dulce” (2007), “Presente” (2013), “Aura” (2019)—continued to mix programmed beats with live tango and candombe elements. Santaolalla has described the result as contemporary Río de la Plata music rather than electrotango exclusively.[24]
Bajofondo’s commercial and critical reception in both Latin America and international markets paralleled that of Gotan Project while drawing more explicitly on Uruguayan as well as Argentine sources. The project demonstrated that a producer-led collective could sustain a multi-album career by treating tango instrumentation as one resource among several rather than as a fixed orchestral template.

Later work and aesthetic
Subsequent releases expanded the rhythmic palette to include stronger candombe and rock elements while retaining bandoneon and violin as recurring colors. The group has toured extensively as a live unit.[24]

Música contemporánea del Río de la Plata
Bajofondo is a Río de la Plata band of eight musicians from Argentina and Uruguay
Founded in the early 2000s as a studio experiment that led to the album Bajofondo Tango Club2000
The music has been called electrotango or electronic tango, but leader Gustavo Santaolalla does not think that describes the group's sound
