Tango in 1990
In 1990 Astor Piazzolla suffered a cerebral thrombosis in Paris, and Osvaldo Pugliese recorded with the singers Abel Córdoba and Adrián Guida and was named an honorary academician of the Academia Nacional del Tango [1][6][9]. In the same year Mariano Mores celebrated fifty years in tango with a recital at the Luna Park, and the stage show Forever Tango had early runs in California, although sources differ on where it began [4][10][11].
The available material on tango in 1990 consists mostly of individual facts drawn from biographies of musicians and singers, a discography listing of recordings dated to that year, and accounts of the stage production Forever Tango [1][9][10]. Together they record illnesses, anniversaries, honours, recordings, releases, a change of residence and theatrical runs, but they do not give a general account of the year [1][4][8].
Among the composers and bandleaders, the year included a serious health crisis for Astor Piazzolla, a golden-anniversary celebration for Mariano Mores, and an academic honour for Osvaldo Pugliese [1][4][6]. Pugliese's orchestra recorded at least three tangos dated 12 September 1990, with Abel Córdoba and Adrián Guida as singers [9]. Singers mentioned in the sources include Roberto Goyeneche, who received the Premio Estrella del Mar and is credited on a 1990 recording of 'Confesión' with Raúl Miguel Garello, and Susana Rinaldi, whose residence moved from Buenos Aires in 1990 [7][8][9].
Outside Argentina, the dance and music show Forever Tango, associated with Luis Bravo, had performances in California in 1990 [10][11]. The two available sources describe its beginnings differently, one naming a San Diego debut and the other a run at UCLA, so its point of origin is treated here as disputed [10][11].
Composers and bandleaders
Astor Piazzolla's biography records that in a 1990 interview he declared: «El tango número uno es 'Adiós Nonino'» [1]. The same source describes 'Adiós Nonino' as his best-known work, which kept the rhythmic section of his earlier tango 'Nonino' [1]. On 4 August 1990 Piazzolla suffered a cerebral thrombosis while in Paris, falling in the bathroom of a Parisian apart-hotel [1].
In 1990 Mariano Mores conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional at the Teatro Colón [4]. On 1 December of that year he celebrated his Bodas de oro, his golden anniversary with the música ciudadana, with his first recital at the Luna Park [4].
Osvaldo Pugliese received the title of Académico Honorario of the Academia Nacional del Tango in 1990 [6]. His orchestra's recordings from that year are described in the Recordings section below [9].
Horacio Salgán's discography lists the work 'Oratorio Carlos Gardel', made with Horacio Ferrer and issued by ABR in 1990 [3]. The Cuarteto Cedrón's discography lists the CD 'Alborada del tango' (1990), with no label named and the catalogue number TAN 01 [2].
Singers
Roberto Goyeneche received the Premio Estrella del Mar in both 1989 and 1990 [7]. A discography listing also credits him as singer on a 1990 recording of the tango 'Confesión' with Raúl Miguel Garello [9].
Susana Rinaldi lived in Buenos Aires from 1983 to 1990, and from 1990 to 2005 she divided her life between France, Italy and Argentina [8]. Her biography explains her choice of the Montmartre district by stating that it «conserva sus gustos, sus tradiciones» [8]. In 1990 she was declared «Ciudadana ilustre de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires» [8]. The following year, 1991, she was named «Visitante ilustre de la Ciudad de México» at Televisa [8].
The same biography states that in the early 1990s Rinaldi had settled permanently in Europe [8]. During this period she performed in Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark and undertook a long tour of the Maisons de la Culture in France [8]. She also gave a benefit concert at a gala held at UNESCO to mark the first anniversary of the Oslo Accords [8]. In 1992 UNESCO named her a «Embajadora de buena voluntad», a role in which she promoted and raised money for literacy campaigns for homeless children [8]. The biography's statement that she settled permanently in Europe sits alongside its statement that she divided her time between France, Italy and Argentina; both are recorded under Disputed [8].
Recordings
A discography listing for 1990 includes the following tango recordings, given with the recording date it records [9]: - 'Esta noche me emborracho', Osvaldo Pugliese with Abel Córdoba, 1990-09-12 (T0370011645) [9] - 'Las cuarenta', Osvaldo Pugliese with Abel Córdoba, 1990-09-12 (T0370007489) [9] - 'Quedémonos aquí', Osvaldo Pugliese with Adrián Guida, 1990-09-12 (T0370399602) [9] - 'Confesión', Raúl Miguel Garello with Roberto Goyeneche, 1990 (T0370006817) [9] - 'A mi pinita', performer not named, 1990-12 (T0371169968) [9] - 'Al compás del corazón', performer not named, 1990-12 (T0370174472) [9] - 'Ayacucho y Arijón', performer not named, 1990-12 (T0371531360) [9] - 'La cumparsita', performer not named, 1990-12 (T0370000024) [9]
These dates refer to the recordings in the listing and are not composition dates for the works [9]. For several entries the listing gives no performer [9].
Other releases dated to 1990 include Horacio Salgán and Horacio Ferrer's 'Oratorio Carlos Gardel' (ABR) and the Cuarteto Cedrón CD 'Alborada del tango' (TAN 01) [2][3].
Stage productions
Accounts of the beginnings of Luis Bravo's Forever Tango differ [10][11]. A document from the production states that the show made its debut at Symphony Hall in San Diego on 23 November 1990 [10]. A 1998 newspaper account states that the show originated at UCLA in 1990, where its five-week run was extended to nine weeks [11]. Because the two sources name different starting points, the show's first venue is treated here as disputed [10][11].
Publications
The article on the tango 'Mi noche triste' cites a 1990 work coordinated and prefaced by Eduardo Romano [5]. The source does not give further details of the publication [5].
