Tango in 1980

The record of tango in 1980 is drawn mainly from recordings that a discography dates to that year, including sessions by Osvaldo Pugliese, Raúl Garello, Alfredo De Angelis, Susana Rinaldi and the Orquesta Típica Corrientes [8]. Other items dated to the year include a personnel change in the Sexteto Mayor [7], a Roberto Goyeneche album with Osvaldo Berlingieri's orchestra [6], an LP by the Cuarteto Cedrón [2] and an interview with Ranko Fujisawa in Tokyo [10].

This article gathers events, releases and recordings that the available sources date to 1980. Most of the material comes from a discography that lists individual recordings with dates. Some entries give a full session date and others give only the year [8].

The artists in that listing for 1980 include the orchestras of Osvaldo Pugliese, Alfredo De Angelis and Osvaldo Fresedo, the Orquesta Típica Corrientes, Raúl Miguel Garello, Alberto Di Paulo with the singer Alberto Podestá, Eduardo Del Piano, Hernán Salinas and the singer Susana Rinaldi [8]. The listing also dates two recordings by Roberto Goyeneche to 1980: one with Osvaldo Berlingieri and one under his own name [8].

Other sources record events of the year. In 1980 the pianist Juan Mazzadi left the Sexteto Mayor and Oscar Palermo replaced him [7]. Goyeneche recorded the album Mi Buenos Aires querido with the orchestra of Osvaldo Berlingieri for RCA [6]. The Cuarteto Cedrón issued the LP Chansons traditionnelles d'Argentine on Polydor [2]. On 12 February 1980 Ranko Fujisawa was interviewed in Tokyo for a chronicle titled 'El tango en Japón' [10].

Apart from a few biographical notes, such as the Sexteto Mayor line-up change [7] and Goyeneche's health in the 1980s [6], the available material consists mainly of recordings and releases [8]. It says almost nothing about the dance scene, venues or the social context of tango in 1980; these limits are listed under gaps [8].

Events and people

The Sexteto Mayor changed its line-up in 1980. That year the pianist Juan Mazzadi retired from the group and Oscar Palermo took his place [7].

A quotation from Astor Piazzolla dates to 1980. He said, for a BBC documentary that year, that it was "when I was able to write the most beautiful piece I wrote in my life" (original: «Cuando pude escribir el tema más lindo que escribí en mi vida») [1]. The excerpt does not name the piece he meant [1].

According to his biography, Roberto Goyeneche began to suffer respiratory problems and problems with his vocal cords during the 1980s. These later led to pneumonia [6]. He nonetheless kept giving concerts and recording new albums, mostly with Raúl Garello, with whom he had worked before [6].

In Japan, the singer Ranko Fujisawa was interviewed on the afternoon of 12 February 1980 at the Ten Roses Café in Tokyo. The interview was for a piece titled 'El tango en Japón' [10].

A biography of Eduardo Arolas refers to an orchestra in connection with 1980 and to the year 1952. The surviving excerpt is too fragmentary to show which orchestra or what event is meant [9].

Albums and releases

Several albums and productions are dated to 1980 in artist articles [2][3][6]:

  • Mi Buenos Aires querido, Roberto Goyeneche with the orchestra of Osvaldo Berlingieri, RCA (1980) [6]
  • Chansons traditionnelles d'Argentine, Cuarteto Cedrón, LP on Polydor, catalogue POL 360, 2473110 (1980) [2] - "En vivo en el viejo almacén", listed in the Edmundo Rivero article as unreleased (inédito), 1980 [3]
  • Buenos Aires, la tercera fundación, listed in the Edmundo Rivero article with the year 1980 [3] - «Luces de mi ciudad», listed in the Mariano Mores article for the 1970s and 1980s; the excerpt breaks off at a collaborator given only as "J." [4]

The article on the tango Mi noche triste cites an item titled Antología cronológica 1900 - 1980. The excerpt gives no further details about it [5].

Recordings: Osvaldo Pugliese and Osvaldo Fresedo

The discography lists two dated sessions by Osvaldo Pugliese's orchestra in 1980. The first was on 3 June and the second on 10 September [8]:

  • A un artista del pueblo (tango), 1980-06-03 [8]
  • Tengo calle (tango), 1980-06-03 [8]
  • Cuando tallan los recuerdos (tango), 1980-09-10 [8]
  • De pura cepa (milonga), 1980-09-10 [8]
  • Montaraz (tango), 1980-09-10 [8]

The listing gives a recording of the tango 'A media luz' by Osvaldo Fresedo with the singer Argentino Ledesma, dated 4 July 1980, with a duration of 02:48 [8].

Recordings: Raúl Miguel Garello

Raúl Miguel Garello has several 1980 entries in the discography. Most have exact dates between January and May [8]:

  • Tiempo imaginado (tango), 1980-01-07 [8]
  • Canaro en París (tango), 1980-01-14 [8]
  • Negracha (tango), 1980-01-14 [8]
  • Buen amigo (tango), 1980-05-05 [8]
  • Azabache (milonga candombe), 1980-05-19 [8]
  • Ojos negros (tango), listed once with the year 1980 only and once with 1980-05-19 [8]
  • Invierno porteño (tango), with Eladia Blázquez, 1980-05-26 [8]

The listing also gives an entry for 'Invierno porteño' dated 27 October 1980, under the same work code, with no performer identified. A further entry, 'Mal de amores', has the same date and also no identified performer. The entries therefore differ on the details of these recordings [8].

Recordings: Alfredo De Angelis

The discography lists 1980 recordings by Alfredo De Angelis. Some are instrumental and others feature the vocalists Carlos Boledi and Isabel de Angelis. The entries give the year only [8]:

  • Alas azules (tango), with Carlos Boledi and Isabel de Angelis [8]
  • Alma de bohemio (tango) [8]
  • Amor y baile (milonga), with Carlos Boledi and Isabel de Angelis [8]
  • Comme il faut (tango) [8]
  • Corazón de oro (vals) [8]
  • Esta noche (tango), with Carlos Boledi [8]
  • Mi refugio (tango) [8]
  • Pollito picarón (milonga), with Carlos Boledi and Isabel de Angelis [8]
  • Rodríguez Peña (tango) [8]
  • Tachero de mi ciudad (tango), with Isabel de Angelis [8]

Recordings: Orquesta Típica Corrientes

The Orquesta Típica Corrientes has the largest number of instrumental entries dated to 1980 in the discography. All of them give the year only [8]:

  • Adiós, Argentina (tango) [8]
  • Bar Exposición (tango) [8]
  • Criolla linda (tango) [8]
  • Duelo criollo (tango) [8]
  • El choclo (tango) [8]
  • El pensamiento (tango) [8]
  • Julienne (tango) [8]
  • La carcajada (tango) [8]
  • La cumparsita (tango) [8]
  • La rosarina (tango) [8]
  • La viruta (tango) [8]
  • Pirincho (tango) [8]

Singers

Susana Rinaldi has a large group of 1980 entries in the discography. They cover tangos, a vals and a milonga, and all give the year only [8]:

  • Bien cerca de Buenos Aires (tango) [8]
  • Cantando (tango) [8]
  • Desde el alma (vals) [8]
  • El motivo | Pobre paica (tango) [8]
  • La morocha (tango) [8]
  • La última grela (tango) [8]
  • Madame Ivonne (tango) [8]
  • María (tango) [8]
  • Ropa blanca (milonga) [8]
  • Silbando (tango) [8]
  • Tinta roja (tango) [8]
  • Uno (tango) [8]
  • Viejo Tortoni (tango) [8]
  • Si Buenos Aires no fuera así (folklore), credited to Juan Carlos Cuacci with Susana Rinaldi [8]

Alberto Podestá appears with Alberto Di Paulo on several entries dated 1980 [8]:

  • Ave de paso (tango) [8]
  • Mañana zarpa un barco (tango) [8]
  • Motivo sentimental (tango) [8]
  • Nada (tango) [8]
  • Tú, el cielo y tú (tango) [8]

Roberto Goyeneche is credited with Osvaldo Berlingieri on the milonga 'Papá Baltasar' (1980). He is also credited under his own name on the tango 'Un tropezón', dated 6 December 1980 [8]. His biography lists the 1980 RCA album Mi Buenos Aires querido with Berlingieri's orchestra [6].

Other recordings

The discography dates a group of recordings by Hernán Salinas to late July and early August 1980 [8]:

  • Las cinco en punto (tango), 1980-07-28 [8]
  • Ya no soy uno más (tango), 1980-07-28 [8]
  • Yuyo verde | Callejón (tango), 1980-07-28 [8]
  • Íntimas (tango), 1980-07-28 [8]
  • Romance de barrio (vals), 1980-08-04 [8]

Eduardo Del Piano is credited with several entries dated 1980. For two of them the listing gives no genre [8]:

  • Corazón tanguero (tango) [8]
  • Desvelo | De flor en flor (genre not given) [8]
  • Pa' los muchachos | A los muchachos (tango) [8]
  • Tinta roja (genre not given) [8]

Repertoire

The 1980 entries in the discography are mostly tangos. They also include valses such as 'Corazón de oro' and 'Desde el alma', and milongas such as 'De pura cepa', 'Amor y baile' and 'Ropa blanca' [8]. Other forms appear as well: 'Azabache' is listed as a milonga candombe, and 'Si Buenos Aires no fuera así' is listed as folklore [8].

Some works appear under more than one performer in that year. For example, 'Tinta roja' is listed for both Susana Rinaldi and Eduardo Del Piano under the same work code [8]. The dates given are recording dates in the listing; they are not composition or first-performance dates [8].

What we don't know yet

  • No source on the dance scene, milongas or venues in Buenos Aires in 1980; the research notes say milonga revival openings are mostly post-1990 or undated
  • No coverage of tango under the dictatorship or of blacklists in 1980 beyond what the sources state
  • Coverage of tango in Japan and Finland in the 1980s is partial; only the Ranko Fujisawa interview is dated
  • No label or catalogue data for most recordings; no cross-check of LPs or labels was done
  • No composition or first-performance years for the works listed; the dates are recording dates in a listing only
  • The Piazzolla quotation does not identify which piece he meant
  • The Eduardo Arolas excerpt is too fragmentary to show which orchestra is linked to 1980
  • The Mariano Mores entry 'Luces de mi ciudad' is truncated and its collaborator is not identified
  • The 1980-10-27 entries ('Invierno porteño', 'Mal de amores') have no identified performer
  • No related entities were supplied
