Tango in 1971
In 1971 Aníbal Troilo's orchestra made its last recordings, many of them with Roberto Goyeneche, and Susana Rinaldi opened the café-concert Magoya in Mar del Plata. [1][8][11] A dated discography also lists studio sessions that year by Juan D'Arienzo, Alfredo De Angelis, Héctor Varela and others. [9]
The sources for tango in 1971 consist mainly of biographical notes on individual musicians and a dated discography listing of recordings from that year. [1][9] The material centres on three subjects: Aníbal Troilo, whose orchestra made its final recordings in June 1971; the singer Susana Rinaldi, who opened a café-concert in Mar del Plata; and a series of studio sessions by orchestras including those of Juan D'Arienzo, Alfredo De Angelis and Héctor Varela. [8][9][11]
Album releases noted for the year include Astor Piazzolla's *Concierto para Quinteto* on RCA and two Philips albums involving Horacio Salgán. [2][5] Personal events recorded for the year include Troilo's civil marriage in August, the death of Osvaldo Pugliese's first wife, and the birth of Rinaldi's daughter Ligia. [1][6][8]
History
Aníbal Troilo
In 1971 Troilo inaugurated the plaza Homero Manzi, marking twenty years since the death of the poet. [1] His Spanish-language biography states that on 3 August 1971 he married Zita (Ida Dudui Kalacci), described as Greek, in a civil ceremony. The same source states that the couple later married in church as a tribute when his mother Felisa died. [1]
Troilo's orchestra kept recording until 24 June 1971. On that date he recorded the last of his 449 renditions. [11] The discography listing includes three titles recorded by Troilo with Roberto Goyeneche on 24 June 1971: *Fogón de huella*, *La violeta* and *Trenzas*. [9]
Osvaldo Pugliese
Osvaldo Pugliese had married María Concepción Florio in 1936. He was widowed in 1971. [6]
Susana Rinaldi and Magoya
In 1971 Susana Rinaldi and her husband Osvaldo Piro opened a café-concert called Magoya in Mar del Plata. [8] Another biography describes Mar del Plata as the main seaside resort in Argentina, on the Atlantic, and also dates the opening of Magoya to 1971. [10]
According to her Spanish-language biography, Magoya became a meeting point for many local and international artists and drew large audiences. [8] Artists named in connection with the venue include Facundo Cabral, Miguel Gila, Norman Briski, Ulises Dumont, Amelita Baltar and Marikena Monti. With Baltar and Monti, Rinaldi presented the show *Tres mujeres* there. [8]
Rinaldi and Piro had two children. Their daughter Ligia, later a jazz singer, was born in 1971, and their son Alfredo Piro, later a tango singer and composer, was born in 1973. [8] The same source states that Rinaldi took part in a UNESCO concert in the mid-1970s, at the invitation of Yehudi Menuhin as president of the International Music Association, and that this appearance received wide attention. [8]
Albums and releases
In 1971 RCA issued Astor Piazzolla's album *Concierto para Quinteto*. The album included his *Concierto para quinteto* and new studio recordings of two of his *Estaciones porteñas*, «Invierno» and «Primavera». [2] The source describes the album as the release in which Piazzolla introduced the *Concierto para quinteto*. No independent date for a first performance appears in the sources. [2]
Horacio Salgán's discography lists two Philips albums from 1971. [5]
- *El bosque mágico*, with Dante Amicarelli (Philips, 1971) [5] - *Tango*, with Ubaldo de Lío (Philips, 1971) [5]
The discography listing also includes *Bahía Blanca*, recorded in 1971 by Horacio Salgán and Ubaldo Aquiles De Lio. [9] The two sources spell the guitarist's name differently. [5][9]
Edmundo Rivero's discography lists two 1971 items. [3]
- A single with the orchestra of Héctor Stamponi (1971) [3] - *Romance para una vereda*, with the orchestra of Raúl Garello and guitars (1971) [3]
Roberto Goyeneche's discography includes a 1971 entry with the orchestra of Aníbal Troilo on RCA. The excerpt does not give the album title. [7] Troilo's biography states that Raúl Garello arranged almost all the tracks on the album Troilo recorded with Goyeneche in 1971. [1] Francisco Canaro's article lists a title, *La muchachada del centro*, with the year 1971, but the excerpt does not say what kind of work it is. [4]
