Contents

The book is in four parts: The Sound (chapters 1–8), The Repertoire (chapters 9–25, from 1943 to 1957), The 1960s and beyond (chapters 26–33) and The Man & the Myth (chapters 34–38). The appendices cover Pugliese on disc, a discography, the orchestra formations and carnival appearances, followed by a bibliography, a glossary and an index of titles.

Contents, pp. viii–ix

Approach and discography

Chapter 9 dates the first recordings to 1943, five years after the orchestra was formed, and the last studio recordings to 1986. The book calls this the longest recording career of any of the great orchestras, and it argues that the orchestra kept developing rather than declining after the 1940s. It divides the repertoire into phases: an early repertoire drawn from Arolas, Bardi, Cobián and the De Caro school; a transition beginning in 1946 with La yumba; and a 'mature' sound from 1954. The discography in Appendix B gives an index number and a recording date for each entry, in sections by label: a first Odeon period, the short-lived Stentor label (one LP, 1960), PolyGram (LP releases without exact recording dates) and a return to Odeon.

Chapter 9, pp. 33–36 · Appendix B, p. 251
