Contents

Part 1, Canaro's Golden Age (1926–1938), has chapters 1–15. Part 2, The show must go on (1939–1964), has chapters 16–24, including Canaro in ten tracks. Part 3, The man & the myth (chapters 25–33), covers his early years, his compositions, Paris and a world tour. The appendices cover Canaro on disc, the musical comedies, the orchestra formations and the Hawaiian guitar, followed by a bibliography, a filmography, a list of shows, a glossary, a note on terminology and structure, and an index of titles. Unlike the four preceding volumes, the contents list no discography appendix.

Approach

Chapter 1 explains that the earlier volumes began with the sound of each orchestra and the musicians who created it. It argues that Canaro's band, with a career going back to 1912, was not built around individuals in the same way. Instead the book adopts, from the author's Tango Stories, a division of the career into rise (up to the trip to Paris in 1925/6), dominance (1927–1938) and decline (after the departure of Roberto Maida in 1939). It gives 3,801 as its best estimate of Canaro's total recordings and largely sets aside the almost 900 acoustic recordings of the first stage.
