Singer
Enrique Campos
Enrique Campos (10 March 1913 – 13 March 1970) was a tango singer who began performing in 1936 and later sang with the orchestras of Ricardo Tanturi, Francisco Rotundo and Roberto Caló [1][2][4]. Ricardo Tanturi gave him the name Enrique Campos when he joined Tanturi's Los Indios in 1943 [1].

Enrique Campos was a tango singer whose career ran from a first public performance in January 1936 to solo recordings for the Magenta label in 1969 [1]. A separate source gives his date of birth as 10 March 1913 [4]. He died in Buenos Aires on 13 March 1970, aged 57 [1].
Campos used more than one name during his career. In 1936 he performed under the name Eduardo Ruiz [1]. Ricardo Tanturi renamed him Enrique Campos when he joined Tanturi's Los Indios in 1943 [1]. He sang with Tanturi in the 1940s and later with the orchestras of Francisco Rotundo and Roberto Caló [1][2]. Sources differ on the dates of his time with Tanturi, as described below [1][3].
Early career
Campos made his first public appearance on 6 January 1936 at the Cine Helvético in Colonia Suiza [1]. The guitarists Alfredo Solís and Carlos Méndez accompanied him [1].
In the same year he sang on the programme Caramelos surtidos on radio CX18 [1]. He then joined Eduardo Depauli's company and performed under the name Eduardo Ruiz [1].
Campos appeared in the Uruguayan film Radio Candelario [1]. The film opened at the Radio City cinema on 21 August 1939 [1].
In 1941 he sang with the orchestra billed as Pintín Castellanos [1]. With it he appeared at the Palacio de la Cerveza, at the Tabarís cabaret and on Radio Monumental [1].
With Ricardo Tanturi
In 1943 Campos joined Ricardo Tanturi's orchestra, Los Indios, replacing Alberto Castillo [1][2]. He made his debut with the orchestra on Radio El Mundo [1]. Tanturi gave him the name Enrique Campos [1].
According to his biography, his first recordings with Tanturi were made on 4 August 1943 [1]. They were the tango 'Muchachos comienza la ronda' and the vals 'Al pasar' [1]. Another source dates his singing with the orchestra from 19 August 1943 [3]. A recording catalogue also dates the earliest RCA Victor recording credited to him to 19 August 1943 . The sources therefore differ on the date of his first recording session with the orchestra [1][3].
The source that gives 19 August 1943 as a start date gives 16 December 1943 as the end date of his period singing with Tanturi [3]. His biography, by contrast, places his last performance with Tanturi in April 1946, at the Club Unión de Caseros [1]. The recording catalogue lists RCA Victor recordings sung by Campos as late as 9 November 1945 . The sources differ on how long his association with Tanturi lasted [1][3].
With Francisco Rotundo and Roberto Caló
In 1947 Campos joined Francisco Rotundo's orchestra [1]. With Rotundo he sang on Radio Splendid, at the Teatro Empire and at the Café Nacional on Corrientes [1].
After returning to Rotundo, he recorded 'Llorando la carta' on 10 August 1951 [1]. In December of that year he recorded 'El viejo vals' as a duet with Floreal Ruiz [1].
In October 1952 Campos left Rotundo [1]. He then sang with Roberto Caló for about two years [1].
His biography refers to a third stay in Rotundo's orchestra [1]. According to that source, the orchestra broke up in 1957, after this third stay [1].
Later career and death
In 1969 Campos recorded as a soloist for the Magenta label [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 13 March 1970, aged 57 [1]. This age matches the birth date of 10 March 1913 given in a separate source [1][4].
Recordings
His biography names the following titles: the tango 'Muchachos comienza la ronda' and the vals 'Al pasar', his first recordings with Tanturi in 1943; 'Llorando la carta', recorded with Rotundo in 1951; and 'El viejo vals', a duet with Floreal Ruiz recorded in December 1951 [1].
