Félix Gutiérrez

Félix Gutiérrez (1909–1992) was a tango singer who recorded with the orchestras of Edgardo Donato and Pedro Maffia and briefly sang with Julio De Caro [3][4][6][8]. He was a member of Donato's orchestra from December 1932, and his recordings appear on both the Odeon and RCA Victor labels [4]. Sources differ on when his time with Donato ended [2][7].

Félix Gutiérrez was a tango singer, born on 19 May 1909 [8]. He died on 6 October 1992 [3].

His earliest documented engagement was with Julio De Caro's orchestra in 1927, where he stayed for about six months and made one recording [1]. In 1932 recordings with his vocals were issued on the Odeon label . That December he joined Edgardo Donato's orchestra [4].

He recorded repeatedly with Donato during 1933 [5]. Sources differ on when he left: one account places his departure in 1934, with Antonio Maida as his replacement, while a recording calendar still lists him singing with Donato in March 1936 [2][7]. In October 1934 he recorded "A través de los años" with Pedro Maffia for RCA Victor [3][6], and in 1938 he became the refrain singer of Mario Azzerboni's orchestra [1].

Early career

In 1927 Gutiérrez joined Julio De Caro's orchestra, remaining for about six months and recording once during that period [1]. The dossier sources give no title or date for that single recording with De Caro [1].

A discography lists four recordings with his vocals on the Odeon label from the second half of 1932, dated 25 August, 29 August, 9 September and 23 September 1932 . These listings do not name the accompanying orchestra or the titles .

With Edgardo Donato

Gutiérrez joined Edgardo Donato's orchestra on 9 December 1932, and he is recorded as singing with the orchestra on that date [4]. A discography also lists a recording with his vocals on the RCA Victor label dated 9 December 1932 .

During 1933 a recording calendar lists him singing with Donato on 21 June, 13 July and 29 November 1933 [5]. RCA Victor recordings with his vocals are listed for 21 June, 13 July and 31 October 1933 .

The end of his time with Donato is reported differently. One source states that he left Donato's orchestra in 1934 and that Antonio Maida replaced him [2]. However, a recording calendar lists him singing with Donato's orchestra on 10 March 1936 [7], and a discography lists an RCA Victor recording with his vocals on the same date . The dossier does not explain whether this reflects a later return to the orchestra or a discrepancy between sources [2][7].

With Pedro Maffia

On 4 October 1934 Gutiérrez recorded "A través de los años" with Pedro Maffia for RCA Victor [3]. A recording calendar for 1934 also lists him singing with Maffia on that date [6].

Later career

In 1938 Gutiérrez became the refrain singer of Mario Azzerboni's orchestra [1]. The dossier contains no further information on his activity after that engagement [1]. He died on 6 October 1992 [3].

Recordings

A discography lists the following recordings with vocals by Gutiérrez, by label and date :

  • Odeon: 25 August 1932, 29 August 1932, 9 September 1932 and 23 September 1932
  • RCA Victor: 9 December 1932, 21 June 1933, 13 July 1933, 31 October 1933 and 10 March 1936

Separately, his recording of "A través de los años" with Pedro Maffia for RCA Victor is dated 4 October 1934 [3][6].

Related

The orchestras most closely connected with Gutiérrez in the sources are those of Edgardo Donato and Pedro Maffia [4][6]. He also worked with the orchestras of Julio De Caro and Mario Azzerboni, and Antonio Maida is named as his successor in Donato's orchestra [1][2].
