Song
El día que me quieras
El día que me quieras is a song with music by Carlos Gardel and lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera, first recorded in New York on 19 March 1934 for the film of the same name.[1][2] The lyric is a paraphrase of a poem by Amado Nervo; the work became one of the most widely covered pieces associated with Gardel.[3][4]
Versions of El día que me quieras recorded 1935–1998
El día que me quieras was written during Carlos Gardel’s period of work with Paramount Pictures in New York.[1] Music is credited to Gardel and lyrics to Alfredo Le Pera; orchestral arrangements for the commercial recording were made by Terig Tucci.[1][5] The first studio recording took place on 19 March 1934 (some secondary sources list 1935) at RCA Victor in New York, issued on shellac 78 rpm with “Volvió una noche” on the reverse.[2][6] The song served as the title number of the 1935 film directed by John Reinhardt, in which Gardel sings it, including a final duet passage with Rosita Moreno.[1][7] The film was released in Havana on 5 July 1935, shortly after Gardel and Le Pera died in the Medellín air crash of 24 June 1935.[8]
The lyric is a paraphrase of the poem of the same title by the Mexican poet Amado Nervo, included in the posthumous collection El arquero divino (1915/1919).[3][9] José Plaja, Gardel’s English teacher and a survivor of the Medellín accident, stated that the text “no fue suya” (was not Le Pera’s) and that an arrangement had been made with Nervo’s family authorizing a song based on the poem.[3][10] Comparison of the texts shows that Le Pera retained the title and the general romantic conceit while rewriting the imagery: Nervo’s “tendrá más luz que junio” becomes “la rosa que engalana,” and the plenilunio night is rephrased.[3] The musical setting is melodic and expansive, with a slow opening section followed by a more rhythmic second part; contemporary commentators have noted affinities with the emerging Mexican bolero.[3]
The recording and the film established the song internationally. Oscar del Priore later called the film performance “el paradigma de la expresión romántica del Gardel intérprete” and the most widely diffused work of the Gardel–Le Pera partnership.[3] Estimates of subsequent recordings exceed one hundred and have included both tango orchestras (Canaro, Troilo, Pugliese, Di Sarli) and artists from bolero, pop and classical traditions (Pedro Vargas, Luis Miguel, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, and others).[4] Luis Miguel’s 1994 version, the lead single from Segundo Romance, returned the song to popular charts across Latin America.[4] In 2001 it was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame; in 2014 it was honored at the La Musa Awards as “La Canción de Todos los Tiempos.”[4]
Under Argentine copyright law the work entered the public domain in 1965, thirty years after the deaths of both authors; a later extension affected certain rights, but the song has long circulated freely.[8] Its trajectory from a Paramount film number written in New York to a global standard illustrates both the international reach Gardel achieved in the early 1930s and the durability of the romantic tango-canción form. The collaboration with Le Pera, the involvement of Tucci as arranger, and the film context are essential to understanding why this particular piece, rather than others from the same sessions (Volver, Por una cabeza), became the emblem of Gardel’s late romantic style.[1][5]

Caress my reverie the soft murmur of your sighing, how life laughs if your black eyes want to look at me! And if mine is the shelter of your light laughter that is like a song, it soothes my wound, everything, everything is forgotten...! The day you love me the rose that adorns will be dressed for a party with its best color. To the wind the bells will say that you are already mine and the crazy fountains will tell me of your love. The night you love me from the blue of the sky, the jealous stars will watch us pass by and a mysterious ray will nest in your hair, curious firefly who will see...that you are my comfort...! Recitation: The day you love me there will be nothing but harmonies, the dawn will be clear and the spring will be joyful. The breeze will be still the murmur of melodies and the fountains will give us their crystal song. The day you love me will sweeten its strings the singing bird, life will blossom, there will be no pain... The night you love me from the blue of the sky, the jealous stars will watch us pass by and a mysterious ray will nest in your hair, curious firefly who will see... that you are my comfort!

Hay una imagen, "El día que me quieras", [inaudible] biopelículas que arrancan en los años 30. Pero, digamos, antes del esmoquin hubo tango.
