May I have your permission, Commissioner? Forgive me if I come so badly dressed, I'm a stranger and I've fallen into the Rosary,.., bringing a good entrapao on my harness. Perhaps you think I'm a thug, I'm a full-fledged gaucho, I'm not a drunkard nor am I a rustler; Mr. Commissioner... I am a criminal!... Arrest me, sergeant, and put me in chains!... If I am a criminal, may God forgive me! I've been a good Creole, my name is Alberto Arenas. Sir... they betrayed me, and I killed them both! My Chinese was evil, my friend was a sotreta; when I went to another payment I was mocked by the infidel. The proofs of the infamy I bring them in my suitcase: my Chinese woman's braids and his heart! Stop it, sergeant, I'm not going to dare!... I want you to know the truth a thousand times over.... The night was as dark as a wolf's mouth; Witness, alone, the light of a candle. All in all, almost nothing: a kiss in the shadow... Two bodies fell, and a curse; and there, commissioner, if you are not astonished, I found two sheaths for my facon. Arrest me, sergeant, and put me in chains!... If I am a criminal, may God forgive me!
