Envidia · Francisco Canaro · 1954

Yo he nacido bueno, yo he nacido honrado, mi cabeza altiva nunca se ha doblado.

Envy, envy feels the one who suffers, envy feels the one who waits seeing that the whole of life is nothing but disappointment. Envy, envy feels the coward, envy feels the one who dies, he who kills and he who wounds, for he shall not be forgiven. Envy, envy, bitter and treacherous envy, envy that cries and weeps; that which causes the most pain is envy for love. I was born good, I was born honorable, my haughty head has never bent. For the companion was my friendly arm and I shook the hand of the one who was an enemy. Never the triumph of another brought me sorrow, nor did I feel bitterness for the happiness of others; and today, before the cruel mirror cruel mirror of my past, I see that changed I have a grudge. Envy, envy I have in my bosom; envy of the one who at your side is happy to be loved while I bite my passion. Envy of my sleeplessness envy like the vanquished because he has never had an illusion in life. Envy, envy that condemns me to live with this pain, because there is no greater pain than envy for love.
