Víctor Soliño was born on 10 September 1897 and died in Montevideo on 13 October 1983 [1][7]. He wrote revues for Montevideo theatres from 1914, wrote his first tango, No quiero, in 1922, and wrote tangos including Mocosita, Maula and Niño bien in the 1920s [2][4][5][6].

Víctor Soliño was born on 10 September 1897 [1]. By 1914 he had begun writing revues that were staged at the Royal and Albéniz theatres in Montevideo [2]. He was a founder of the Club Atlético Atenas in 1918 [3].

Soliño wrote his first tango, No quiero, in 1922, around the time the Troupe Ateniense formed [4]. Later in the 1920s he wrote tangos with several collaborators, among them Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, Adolfo Mondino and Roberto Fontaina [5][2][6]. In 1931 he took part in founding Radio El Espectador [2]. He died in Montevideo on 13 October 1983 [7].

Early career and theatre

Soliño's documented activity began in 1914, when he started writing revues that were staged at the Royal and Albéniz theatres in Montevideo [2].

In 1918 he was one of the founders of the Club Atlético Atenas [3]. Around 1922, the year in which he wrote his first tango, the Troupe Ateniense formed [4].

Repertoire

The dossier records the following works and collaborations, in chronological order [4][5][2][6]:

  • 1922: No quiero, his first tango [4].
  • 1926: Mocosita, written with Gerardo Matos Rodríguez [5].
  • 1927: Maula, written with Adolfo Mondino, which won first prize in a contest held at the Teatro Solís [2].
  • 1927: Garufa appeared in the same year [2].
  • 1928: Niño bien and T.B.C., both written with Roberto Fontaina [6].

The 1927 contest at the Teatro Solís is the only award in Soliño's career that the available sources record [2].

Radio and later life

In 1931 Soliño took part in founding Radio El Espectador [2]. The available sources record no further dated events in his career after this. He died in Montevideo on 13 October 1983 [7].
