Juan Guido
Juan Guido, who appears in sources as Juan Bautista Guido, was a Buenos Aires musician and bandleader who led trios, quintets and an orchestra in cafés and theatres in the 1910s and 1920s [1]. He recorded for Victor from 1927, with about eighty sides made until 1930 [1][2], and died in Buenos Aires in 1945 [3].
Juan Guido was born on 1 February 1898 [4]. Sources title him Juan Bautista Guido, and in 1929 he led an ensemble billed as the Típica Criolla Juan B. Guido [1][2][3].
His career began when he was about thirteen, in 1911, as a member of the large group led by his teacher Arturo Severino [1]. By 1913 he led his own trio, and by 1916 a quintet that appeared in several Buenos Aires venues [1]. He recorded for Victor from 1927 and formed an orchestra for the label in 1928 [1][2]. In later years he played in orchestras led by others, including Ángel Greco's Guardia Vieja orchestra in 1935 and Lopecito's orchestra in 1945 [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 5 October 1945 [3].
History
Guido's first recorded engagement came in 1911, when at about thirteen he joined the large group of his teacher Arturo Severino [1].
In 1913 he led his own trio at the Café 43 on Avenida Caseros, a venue named after a cigarette brand made nearby [1]. By 1916 he led a quintet that played the Café La Morocha and the bar Los Leones, and spent nearly a year at the Tabarís [1].
In 1928 he formed his orchestra for Victor [1]. In 1929 he led the Típica Criolla Juan B. Guido on the same bill as Carlos Gardel at the Cine Teatro Suipacha [1].
In the 1930s and 1940s Guido worked as a member of other leaders' orchestras. In 1935 he played in Ángel Greco's Guardia Vieja orchestra [1]. In 1945 he played in Lopecito's orchestra, both on the radio programme De Villoldo a Gardel and on tour [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 5 October 1945 [3].
Recordings
On 3 May 1927 Guido recorded Mar del Plata for Victor [2]. After he formed his orchestra for Victor in 1928, about eighty sides followed until 1930 [1].
