Orchestra

Adolfo Carabelli

The Adolfo Carabelli orchestra was the ensemble led by Adolfo Carabelli, who became artistic director at Victor in 1926 and formed an orchestra for both jazz and tango [1][8]. Its recordings with vocalists such as Alberto Gómez, Mercedes Simone, Carlos Lafuente, Charlo, Luis Díaz and Teófilo Ibáñez are documented between 1931 and 1934 [3][4][5][9][10].

Adolfo Carabelli led the orchestra that bears his name [8]. One source gives his birth date as 8 September 1893 [2].

Around 1917, while playing classical music with the Trío Argentina, Carabelli met the pianist Lipoff and turned to jazz. He later led the River Jazz Band [1].

In 1926 the Victor company hired him as artistic director to form an orchestra for both jazz and tango. He also directed the studio-only Orquesta Típica Victor [1].

History

Until about 1925, Carabelli led an orchestra on a newly opened Buenos Aires radio station and recorded for the Electra label [1]. In 1926 Victor hired him as artistic director to form an orchestra for both jazz and tango, and he also directed the studio-only Orquesta Típica Victor [1].

In the 1930s Carabelli led a jazz orchestra heard on LR4 Radio Splendid and LR6 Radio Mitre. From 1935 his recording sessions became rare [1].

Carabelli wrote the score for the film De la sierra al valle in 1938. He followed it with Ambición in 1939 and two films by José Ferreyra in 1940 [1]. He made his last record, Victor 38.913, in 1940 [1].

Carabelli died alone at his home in San Fernando on 25 January 1947 [1].
