Teófilo Ibáñez

Teófilo Ibáñez was a tango singer whose recorded career, as documented in the available sources, ran from 1928 to 1939 ^[1][14]. He was born on 22 July 1907 ^[13] and died on 10 March 1986 ^[1].

He began with the orchestra of Roberto Firpo. His debut with Firpo took place at the Teatro Casino, and his first Odeon recordings date from 8 February 1928 ^[1]. He sang refrains with Firpo until November 1929 ^[1][5]. He then recorded with the Orquesta Típica Victor in 1930 ^[2]. From 1931 he recorded for Brunswick with the orchestras of Julio De Caro, Edgardo Donato and Osvaldo Fresedo ^[1][3][4][7].

By 1934 he was back at Victor, where he recorded "Derecho viejo" with lyrics ^[1]. In the same year a calendar lists him with Adolfo Carabelli ^[8]. In 1938 he became the first singer of Rodolfo Biagi's orchestra and recorded with it into 1939 ^{[1][9][10][11][12]}. Sources give different accounts of how long he stayed with Biagi ^[1][6][10].

Early career with Roberto Firpo

Ibáñez made his debut with Roberto Firpo at the Teatro Casino ^[1]. His first Odeon recordings with Firpo are dated 8 February 1928 ^[1]. A recording catalogue lists further Odeon sides sung by Ibáñez dated 29 February 1928, 15 March 1928 and 1 November 1928 ^[14].

His association with Firpo continued through 1929. A 1929 calendar lists him with Firpo's orchestra on 21 March, 26 June and 26 October of that year ^[5]. The catalogue also lists an Odeon recording sung by him dated 26 June 1929 ^[14]. His biography states that he sang his last refrains with Firpo in November 1929 ^[1].

In 1931 he began recording for the Brunswick label with the orchestras of Julio De Caro, Edgardo Donato and Osvaldo Fresedo ^[1]. Recording listings for Fresedo's orchestra place Ibáñez with it in 1931 ^[3][4]. A biography of Edgardo Donato also connects him with Donato's orchestra ^[7]. A recording catalogue lists a Brunswick side sung by Ibáñez dated 1932 ^[14]. In the same catalogue, "La muerte de Milonguita" is listed with Edgardo Donato in 1932 ^[14].

Return to Victor and work with Adolfo Carabelli

By 1934 Ibáñez had returned to Victor. On 1 June 1934 he recorded "Derecho viejo" with lyrics ^[1]. A 1934 calendar lists him with the orchestra of Adolfo Carabelli on 6 July 1934 ^[8].

Rodolfo Biagi

In 1938 Ibáñez joined the orchestra of Rodolfo Biagi as its first singer ^[1][10][11]. Other sources also record his work with Biagi ^[12]. A 1938 calendar lists him with Biagi on 19 August, 17 October, 15 November and 2 December 1938 ^[9]. A discography of Biagi's complete recorded work places his recordings with the orchestra between 19 August 1938 and 27 April 1939 ^[10].

A recording catalogue lists Odeon sides sung by Ibáñez dated 24 March 1939 and 27 April 1939 ^[14]. Titles from 1939 with Biagi associated with him include ^[14]: - "Campo afuera" (Rodolfo Biagi, 1939) ^[14] - "Alma de bohemio" (Rodolfo Biagi, 1939) ^[14] - "La novena" (Rodolfo Biagi, 1939) ^[14]

Sources differ on the length of his stay with Biagi ^[1][6][10]. His biography says he was the orchestra's singer for eight months ^[1]. A biography of Andrés Falgás places his departure from Biagi's orchestra in July 1939 ^[6].

Later life

The available sources record no activity by Ibáñez after his period with Biagi. He died on 10 March 1986 ^[1].
