Singer
Alberto Gómez
Alberto Gómez was a tango singer. One source gives his birth date as 19 June 1904, and he began his career in 1927 as one half of a duo with Augusto Vila [10][1]. In the early 1930s he recorded with the Orquesta Típica Victor and with the orchestra of Adolfo Carabelli; he later took leading roles in ¡Tango! and Juan Moreira, sang with Pedro Maffia on Radio Belgrano in 1959, and died in 1973 [2][3][4][8][1].
Alberto Gómez was a singer whose career is documented from 1927, when he formed a duo with Augusto Vila, until the late 1950s, when he appeared on radio with Pedro Maffia [1]. One source gives his date of birth as 19 June 1904 [10]. A biographical sketch by Ricardo García Blaya and Néstor Pinsón records his death in 1973 [1].
In the early 1930s Gómez worked as a recording vocalist. With Augusto Vila he recorded alongside the Típica Victor in 1930 [2]. In 1931 he sang a waltz with the Orquesta Típica Victor under the name Nico [3]. Between 1931 and 1933 he sang with the orchestra of Adolfo Carabelli [4][5][6][8][9]. In 1932 he also sang with the Orquesta Típica Los Provincianos, directed by Ciriaco Ortiz [7]. During the same period he took leading parts in the productions ¡Tango! (1933) and Juan Moreira (1936) [1].
Early career: the duo with Augusto Vila
According to the biographical sketch, Gómez started a duo with Augusto Vila in 1927 [1]. The pair performed in cafés and theatres in Lomas de Zamora and in cinemas on Corrientes [1].
The duo also recorded. On 26 June 1930 Gómez and Vila recorded Lloró el gaucho with the Típica Victor [2].
With the Orquesta Típica Victor
Beyond the 1930 duo recording, Gómez sang as a soloist with the Orquesta Típica Victor. In 1931 he sang the waltz Ausencia with the orchestra, credited under the name Nico [3].
With Adolfo Carabelli
Several sources link Gómez to the orchestra of Adolfo Carabelli [4][5][6][8][9]. A biography of Carabelli by Héctor Ángel Benedetti names Gómez among the singers associated with that orchestra but gives no date for the association [8].
Recording listings date the collaboration to 1931, through the titles Por qué and Cantando [4][5]. A listing for Alma gives a Carabelli recording with Gómez on 9 September 1932 [6]. A 1933 tango calendar records a Carabelli date with Gómez on 14 March 1933 [9]. Together, these sources place his work with the orchestra between 1931 and early 1933 [4][5][6][9].
With Los Provincianos
Gómez also sang with the Orquesta Típica Los Provincianos, directed by Ciriaco Ortiz [7]. A listing for the title Samaritana records this collaboration on 27 July 1932 [7].
Leading roles
The biographical sketch states that in 1933 Gómez was the leading man and a singer in ¡Tango! [1]. The same source records that he had the leading role in Juan Moreira in 1936 [1]. The dossier does not say what kind of productions these were.
Later career
In 1959 Gómez sang with Pedro Maffia on Radio Belgrano [1]. In the same year he recorded for the TK label [1]. The biographical sketch records his death in 1973 [1].
Recordings
A public recording catalogue credits Gómez as vocalist on recordings dated as follows [11]:
- 2 November 1931 [11] - 20 May 1932 [11] - 24 May 1932 [11] - 17 June 1932 [11] - 9 September 1932 [11] - 27 September 1932 [11] - 20 February 1935, an entry labelled RCA Victor [11]
The catalogue entry for 9 September 1932 has the same date as the Carabelli recording of Alma [11][6]. The catalogue does not give titles for most of these entries [11].
