Tango in 1978

In 1978 several tango figures were active both inside and outside Argentina. Astor Piazzolla wrote an imaginary letter to Carlos Gardel and returned to working with his Quinteto Nuevo Tango [1][2]. Susana Rinaldi settled in Paris [6], and recordings were issued or made by Roberto Goyeneche, Osvaldo Pugliese, the Cuarteto Cedrón and the Orquesta Típica Corrientes [3][5][7].

The material for 1978 covers three kinds of activity: biographical events in the careers of established tango musicians, record releases, and individual recording sessions listed in a discography [1][5][7].

Astor Piazzolla is linked to two events that year. He wrote an imaginary letter to Carlos Gardel [1][2]. According to the Spanish-language Wikipedia article on Piazzolla, from 1978 he also worked again with the Quinteto Nuevo Tango and returned to composing symphonic works and chamber pieces [1].

Several tango figures were working abroad in 1978. Susana Rinaldi settled in the Montmartre district of Paris and performed in the city [6]. The family group of Mariano Mores toured several Latin American countries and the United States [4].

On record, 1978 saw the release of the LP El caballo de la calesita (Le Cheval Du Manège) by the Cuarteto Cedrón on Polydor [3]. Roberto Goyeneche released Nada más que un corazón with the Orquesta Típica Porteña of Raúl Garello on RCA [5]. A discography lists recordings dated 1978 by the Orquesta Típica Corrientes, by Osvaldo Pugliese (with and without the singer Abel Córdoba), and by the Orquesta Típica Porteña with the singers Roberto Goyeneche and Roberto Rufino [7].

History

Astor Piazzolla

In 1978 Astor Piazzolla wrote an imaginary letter addressed to Carlos Gardel [2]. The Spanish-language Wikipedia article on Piazzolla says that in this letter he joked about a particular matter discussed in that article [1]. The dossier does not identify that matter or quote the letter's text [1][2].

The same article says that from 1978 Piazzolla worked again with the Quinteto Nuevo Tango and resumed composing symphonic works and chamber pieces [1]. The dossier names no specific compositions or concerts from that year [1].

Susana Rinaldi in Paris

In 1978 the singer Susana Rinaldi settled permanently in the Montmartre neighbourhood in the 18th arrondissement of Paris [6]. She stayed there until 1983, when she returned to Argentina after the election of President Raúl Alfonsín [6].

During 1978 Rinaldi sang at the Théâtre de la Ville, a municipal theatre in Paris [6]. She also gave a concert at UNESCO at the invitation of Yehudi Menuhin, president of the International Music Council (Asociación Internacional de Música) [6].

Mariano Mores

In 1978 the family group of Mariano Mores, described in its source as the family "clan", toured several Latin American countries and the United States [4]. The dossier does not give the countries, venues or dates of the tour [4].

Recordings

Albums

The Cuarteto Cedrón released the LP El caballo de la calesita (Le Cheval Du Manège) in 1978 on Polydor, catalogue number 2473 094 [3].

Roberto Goyeneche's album Nada más que un corazón, recorded with the Orquesta Típica Porteña led by Raúl Garello, appeared in 1978 on RCA [5].

Orquesta Típica Porteña

A discography lists 1978 recordings by the Orquesta Típica Porteña with Roberto Goyeneche. Some carry exact dates [7]:

  • La uruguayita Lucía (tango), 1978-07-12 [7]
  • Pa' que seguir (tango), 1978-07-12 [7]
  • Cristal (tango), 1978-08-01 [7]
  • Mi castigo (tango), 1978-08-16 [7]

The same listing credits the Orquesta Típica Porteña, directed by R. Garello, with recordings dated 1978 featuring Roberto Rufino [7]:

  • Melenita de oro (tango) [7]
  • Milonguita | Esthercita (tango) [7]
  • Íntimas (tango) [7]

The dossier does not say whether the Goyeneche recordings listed above belong to the album Nada más que un corazón [5][7].

Osvaldo Pugliese

The discography lists three instrumental recordings by Osvaldo Pugliese dated 1978-12-20 [7]:

  • El africano (tango) [7]
  • El japanga (tango) [7]
  • Mato y voy (tango) [7]

It also lists Adiós, pampa mía (tango), recorded by Pugliese with the singer Abel Córdoba and dated 1978 without a specific day [7].

Orquesta Típica Corrientes

The discography lists the following tangos by the Orquesta Típica Corrientes, each dated only to the year 1978 [7]:

  • 9 de julio [7]
  • El Marne [7]
  • El caburé [7]
  • El chamuyo [7]
  • El distinguido ciudadano [7]
  • Felicia [7]
  • Mano a mano [7]
  • Mentira [7]
  • Mi refugio [7]
  • Recuerdo [7]

These dates refer only to the 1978 recordings in the listing. They are not composition or premiere dates for the works [7].

What we don't know yet

  • The dossier does not identify the matter Piazzolla joked about in his imaginary letter to Gardel, and it does not quote the letter.
  • No specific Piazzolla compositions, concerts or recordings from 1978 are documented.
  • No countries, venues or dates are given for the Mariano Mores family tour.
  • No track list is given for Nada más que un corazón, so its link to the dated Goyeneche recordings cannot be confirmed.
  • Composition and premiere years are not given for any of the works recorded in 1978; the listed dates are recording dates only.
  • Most discography entries are dated only to the year 1978, with no day or month, and no labels are given for them.
  • No source covers dance, milongas or the social tango scene in 1978.
  • The dossier notes that milonga revival openings in Buenos Aires are mostly post-1990 or undated.
  • The dossier notes that there are no documented facts on dictatorship-era blacklists beyond Wikipedia, and none are given for 1978.
  • The dossier notes that no cross-check of LP and label data against other discographic databases was done.
  • Coverage of tango in Finland and Japan is noted as partial, with nothing specific to 1978.
