Tanda / cortina
The tanda and the cortina are elements of the codes (códigos) of the milonga [1][2]. A tanda is a set of usually four tangos, or three milongas or valses, by one orchestra, and a cortina is a short interlude of non-tango music that clears the floor between tandas [1][2].
In the dossier's sources, the tanda and the cortina are classed among the codes of the milonga, the customs that govern a tango dance event [1][2].
A tanda is defined as a set of music by one orchestra [1][2]. It usually contains four tangos, or three milongas or three valses [1][2].
The cortina is a short musical interlude of non-tango music that clears the dance floor between one tanda and the next [1][2].
Dance notes
Because the cortina clears the floor between tandas, the sources describe dancing at a milonga as divided into successive tandas separated by cortinas [1][2]. Each tanda keeps to a single orchestra and one rhythm: tango, milonga or vals [1][2].
