Por una cabeza
Por una cabeza is a tango composed in 1935 by Carlos Gardel with lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera for the Paramount film Tango Bar. Gardel recorded it in New York on 19 March 1935; both authors died in a plane crash in Medellín on 24 June 1935, three months later. The song equates the compulsive gambler’s narrow losses at the racetrack with romantic disappointment and has become one of the most internationally recognized tangos.[1][2][3]

Por una cabeza belongs to the final, highly productive collaboration between Carlos Gardel and the lyricist, screenwriter and journalist Alfredo Le Pera. Written for the 1935 Paramount film Tango Bar, the tango uses the Rioplatense racing expression “por una cabeza” (by a head—the margin by which a horse wins or loses) as a metaphor for both gambling addiction and romantic failure. Gardel, an enthusiastic racetrack bettor, and Le Pera shaped the text around a narrator who cannot stop risking everything on horses or on women. The music is credited to Gardel; the lyrics to Le Pera. Arrangements for the film and recordings involved the pianist and conductor Terig Tucci, who worked closely with Gardel on his American productions.[1][2][4]
Gardel recorded the song on 19 March 1935 at Victor Studio 3 in New York (matrix BVE-89227). The session also produced other numbers for his final films. The recording was issued on Victor 32534 (and related catalog numbers for export markets). In the film Tango Bar, directed by John Reinhardt and written by Le Pera, Gardel performs the tango on screen. The picture was completed before the authors’ deaths and premiered posthumously. Accounts of the song’s genesis include an anecdote in which Gardel telephoned Tucci at three in the morning to announce that he had found a suitable melody; Tucci’s initial lukewarm reaction prompted a joking rebuke from Gardel about staying out of “matungo” (horse) matters.[1][3][5]
On 24 June 1935 the plane carrying Gardel, Le Pera, guitarists Guillermo Barbieri and Ángel Riverol, and other members of the touring party crashed on takeoff at Medellín airport in Colombia. All principal creative participants in the tango died. The sudden loss fixed Por una cabeza, together with Volver and El día que me quieras, as the last major works of the Gardel–Le Pera partnership. Under Argentine copyright law the joint works entered the public domain on 1 January 2006, seventy years after the authors’ deaths.[1][2][6]
The tango’s clear, moderately paced melody and its instantly recognizable opening phrase made it a favorite of both dance orchestras and concert performers. It appears in numerous film soundtracks, most famously the tango sequence danced by Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman (1992), the opening of Schindler’s List (1993), and a scene in True Lies (1994). Violinists such as Itzhak Perlman and Augustin Hadelich have recorded instrumental versions. In Argentina and among tango dancers worldwide it remains a standard, valued for its rhythmic clarity and emotional directness. The parallel between the racetrack and romantic risk continues to resonate with listeners familiar with the original cultural context of porteño gambling culture in the 1930s.[1][3][7]
Creation and recording
The song was prepared in New York during the production of Tango Bar. Gardel’s Victor session of 19 March 1935 captured the definitive studio version. Contemporary accounts emphasize Gardel’s personal interest in horse racing as the immediate inspiration for both title and theme. Le Pera’s lyrics maintain the concise, conversational tone characteristic of the pair’s film songs while embedding the specific racing jargon.[1][4][5]
Film context and posthumous fame
Tango Bar was one of two Paramount features (with El día que me quieras) filmed in early 1935. The plane crash of 24 June prevented further collaboration and turned the existing recordings and film performances into final statements. The posthumous release of the films and discs cemented the songs’ status. Later Hollywood uses introduced the melody to global audiences who might never have encountered traditional tango.[2][3][6]
Musical character and reception
The piece is typically performed at a moderate tempo suitable for both listening and social dancing. Its harmonic simplicity and strong melodic contour have facilitated countless arrangements for orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo instrument and popular crossover. Public-domain status since 2006 has further encouraged new recordings and adaptations.[1][7]

Yo juré mil veces, no vuelvo a insistir.

For a head of a noble colt that right at the line loosens on arrival, and when returning seems to say: Don't forget, brother, you know, don't play. For a head, one day's metejon of that flirtatious and mocking woman who, while swearing smiling the love she's lying, burns in a bonfire all my love. For a head, all the follies. Her kissing mouth erases sadness, soothes bitterness. For a head, if she forgets me what does it matter to lose me a thousand times life, why live. How many disappointments, for one head. I swore a thousand times, I will not insist again. But if a glance wounds me as I pass by, her fiery lips I want to kiss again. No more running, the game is over. A close finish I'll never see again! But if any pingo becomes fixed on Sunday, I'll bet the whole thing. What can I do!
