Caminito

Caminito is a tango whose music was completed by Juan de Dios Filiberto in 1926 and whose lyrics, written years earlier by Gabino Coria Peñaloza, evoke a lost love in the town of Olta, La Rioja. First recorded by Carlos Gardel on 26 November 1926, it achieved wide popularity after Ignacio Corsini’s 1927 stage performance and remains one of the most frequently performed tangos worldwide.[17,18]

Versions of Caminito recorded 1926–2009

The lyrics of Caminito were written by the poet Gabino Coria Peñaloza around 1903 while he was staying in the small town of Olta in the province of La Rioja. Isolated by flooding, he walked a narrow path bordered by clover and rushes with a young music teacher; after she left, he set down verses that address the path itself as a confidant of lost love.[17,19] More than twenty years later, in Buenos Aires, Coria Peñaloza met the composer Juan de Dios Filiberto through the painter Benito Quinquela Martín. Filiberto had already sketched a melody inspired by a narrow alley in his own neighborhood of La Boca, the path he walked from Magallanes Street toward the Vuelta de Rocha while working as a mechanic.[17,20]

In 1925 or early 1926 the two men met in a café on Florida Street near number 300. Filiberto hummed the unfinished melody; Coria Peñaloza recited the old Olta verses. Filiberto suggested minor textual changes to fit the musical meter, but the poet refused; the composer therefore adjusted the melody to the existing lines. The finished piece was entered in the Concurso de Canciones Nativas of the official Buenos Aires carnival of 1926, where Filiberto presented it with a small ensemble of harmonium, ten violins, and a vocal quartet. It received first prize and warm applause according to La Nación, although Filiberto later recalled some whistling from a public expecting more energetic carnival fare. He registered the work as a “canción porteña,” distinguishing it from the stricter tango form and acknowledging its folk-like, almost vidalita character.[17,20]

Carlos Gardel recorded the song for Odeón on 26 November 1926 (matrix 4076), accompanied by the guitars of José Ricardo and Guillermo Barbieri, but the disc did not immediately stand out. On 5 May 1927 Ignacio Corsini sang Caminito in Alberto Novión’s sainete Facha Tosta at the Teatro Cómico. The performance was a decisive success; Filiberto, present in the audience, stood on a seat and shouted approval. Gardel, also in the theater, is said to have ceded the song to Corsini, an unusual gesture given exclusive recording contracts of the period. Thereafter the piece circulated widely.[18,21]

The dual geographic origins—Filiberto’s La Boca alley and Coria Peñaloza’s Olta path—have produced two physical “Caminitos.” On 18 October 1959 the short street in La Boca was officially named and inaugurated with fireworks and ship horns; a bust of Filiberto stands there today. On 19 February 1971 the city of Chilecito in La Rioja named a street Caminito in honor of the living poet. Filiberto had died the day before the La Rioja ceremony; his coffin was carried through the La Boca street to the sound of the tango.[17]

Musically the piece is notably economical, with fewer notes and bars than many contemporary tangos. Each stanza begins in F minor and brightens to F major in the refrain, reinforcing the melancholic tone. It has been recorded by dozens of artists across genres and is frequently ranked among the three most famous tangos internationally, after La cumparsita and El choclo. Versions range from the original Gardel and Corsini interpretations to later orchestral readings and the 1990 Three Tenors medley.[18,20] Its simple melodic contour and the universal theme of a path that has witnessed both happiness and loss have secured its place in the permanent repertoire of both traditional and modern tango ensembles.

Lyric and musical origins

Coria Peñaloza’s 1903 verses arose from a youthful romance in flood-isolated Olta. Filiberto’s melody, begun around 1923, reflected daily walks in La Boca. Their 1926 collaboration fused the two sources without textual alteration by the poet.[17]

Premiere and early success

The 1926 carnival contest gave the piece its first public hearing. Gardel’s November recording followed, but Corsini’s May 1927 stage performance in Facha Tosta established the song’s popularity. Filiberto’s own reaction to Corsini’s interpretation is preserved in contemporary anecdote.[18,21]

Geographic afterlife

The La Boca street was inaugurated in 1959; the Chilecito street followed in 1971. Both sites continue to attract visitors who associate the physical places with the tango.[17]
