Roberto Fugazot

Roberto Fugazot was a tango singer, lyricist and actor, born on 20 June 1902 and died in Buenos Aires on 8 August 1971 [9][6]. In 1927 he recorded for Victor with Agustín Irusta and was associated with the orchestra of Francisco Canaro, who took the pair to Paris [2][7][8].

Roberto Fugazot was a singer whose career, as documented in the available sources, ran from Uruguayan radio in the mid-1920s to the Buenos Aires stage, recording studios, and Argentine film [1][2][5]. Sources record his birth on 20 June 1902 and his death in Buenos Aires on 8 August 1971 [9][6].

He was closely linked with fellow singer Agustín Irusta, with whom he recorded and co-wrote, and with the bandleader Francisco Canaro, whose orchestra he sang with in 1927 and in whose musical comedies he later appeared [2][4][5][7][8]. He was also credited as a lyricist on the tangos Barrio reo and Dandy [3][4].

Early career

In 1924 Fugazot sang on Uruguayan radio alongside Américo Chiriff and Ítalo Goyeche, and later made his debut at the Teatro Nacional in Buenos Aires [1].

On 6 November 1926, at the Teatro Nuevo, he introduced the tango Viejo ciego in the production Patadas y serenatas en el barrio de las latas [1].

Work with Agustín Irusta and Francisco Canaro

In 1927 Fugazot and Agustín Irusta recorded for the Victor label [2]. That year the two sang the refrain of Noche de reyes, the winning piece of the fourth Glücksmann contest [2]. Francisco Canaro then took them to Paris [2].

Discographic sources list Fugazot as a singer with Francisco Canaro's orchestra in 1927 [7][8]. One of these is a release catalogued as Noche De Reyes / Yo Tambien Era Dichoso [8].

Songwriting

Fugazot also wrote lyrics. In 1927 he wrote Barrio reo with Alfredo Navarrine [3]. In 1928 he wrote the words of Dandy together with Agustín Irusta, set to music by Lucio Demare [4].

Film and stage

In 1936 Fugazot appeared in Ya tiene comisario el pueblo, described as his first Argentine film [5]. He also appeared in Canaro's musical comedies [5].

Death

Fugazot died in Buenos Aires on 8 August 1971 [6].
