Singer

Mario Pomar

Mario Pomar was a tango singer, born on 1 April 1920, who first sang on radio as Mario Corrales and went on to record with the Orquesta Típica Victor, Antonio Rodio, Osmar Maderna and Carlos Di Sarli [1][2][3][4]. In 1956 he formed Los Señores del Tango with Oscar Serpa, and he died in Buenos Aires on 21 May 1987 [1].

Mario Pomar was a tango singer born on 1 April 1920 [4]. Early in his career he performed under the name Mario Corrales, and in 1938 he was singing under that name with Federico Scorticati's orchestra on LR3 Radio Belgrano [1].

His recording career began with the Orquesta Típica Victor in 1939 [1]. Over the following years he recorded with Antonio Rodio's orchestra and with Osmar Maderna's orchestra [2][1][3]. He also worked briefly with Miguel Caló and sang with Francisco Rotundo [1].

His longest documented association was with the orchestra of Carlos Di Sarli, which he joined alongside Oscar Serpa in 1951 and with which he recorded until 1955 [1]. A recording catalogue lists him as the singer on recordings issued on the Music Hall and RCA Victor labels between 1952 and 1955 . After Di Sarli's orchestra dissolved, he formed the vocal duo Los Señores del Tango with Serpa in 1956 [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 21 May 1987 [1].

Early career

Pomar was born on 1 April 1920 [4]. In 1938 he sang with Federico Scorticati's orchestra on LR3 Radio Belgrano, still using the name Mario Corrales [1].

On 8 May 1939 he made his first records with the Orquesta Típica Victor: the vals "Vuelve otra vez" and the ranchera "La mentirosa" [1]. His last recording with the Típica Victor, the vals "Temo", dates from 1940 [1]. In the same year he spent a brief spell with the orchestra of Miguel Caló [1].

Rodio, Rotundo and Maderna

On 11 May 1943 Pomar recorded "Canyengue" and "Tabú" with Antonio Rodio's orchestra [2].

In 1946 he sang with Francisco Rotundo, appearing on Radio Splendid and at the Confitería La Armonía [1].

On 20 November 1947 he recorded "Ausencia" with Osmar Maderna's orchestra [1]. A tango calendar also lists him as singing with Maderna on 5 April 1948 [3].

With Carlos Di Sarli

On 16 March 1951 Carlos Di Sarli's new orchestra, with Pomar and Oscar Serpa as singers, opened at Radio El Mundo [1].

On 8 September 1954, back on the RCA Victor label with Di Sarli, Pomar recorded Discépolo's "Tormenta" [1]. His last recording with Di Sarli, made on 16 September 1955, was a second version of "Nido gaucho", after which the orchestra dissolved [1].

Los Señores del Tango and later life

In 1956 Pomar formed Los Señores del Tango with Oscar Serpa; the pair broadcast on Radio Belgrano and recorded for the Music Hall label [1].

Pomar died in Buenos Aires on 21 May 1987 [1].

Recordings

A recording catalogue lists Pomar as the singer on the following dated recordings, identified there by label :

  • 8 April 1952, Music Hall
  • 22 July 1952, Music Hall
  • 5 March 1953, Music Hall
  • 21 April 1953, Music Hall
  • 26 June 1953, two recordings, Music Hall
  • 26 January 1954, Music Hall
  • 8 September 1954, RCA Victor
  • 7 December 1954, RCA Victor
  • 2 February 1955, RCA Victor
  • 16 September 1955, RCA Victor

The catalogue entries do not give song titles or the accompanying orchestra . The RCA Victor dates of 8 September 1954 and 16 September 1955 match the dates the biography gives for his recordings of "Tormenta" and "Nido gaucho" with Di Sarli [1]. The Music Hall entries from 1952 to 1954 predate the 1956 formation of Los Señores del Tango, which the biography connects with that label [1].
