Singer

Floreal Ruiz

Floreal Ruiz was a tango singer, born on 29 March 1916, who sang with the orchestras of José Otero, Alfredo De Angelis, Aníbal Troilo, Francisco Rotundo and José Basso, and closed his career with the Orquesta Típica Porteña directed by Raúl Garello [1][2][8]. He died in Buenos Aires on 17 April 1978 [1].

Floreal Ruiz was born on 29 March 1916 [8]. He began his career under assumed names: he won a singing contest on Radio Fénix in 1936 under a pseudonym [2], and in 1938 he became the singer of José Otero's orchestra as Fabián Conde [1]. He first sang under his real name in 1942 [1].

His principal engagements were with Alfredo De Angelis from 1943, Aníbal Troilo from 1944 to 1948, Francisco Rotundo from 1948 or 1949 until that orchestra dissolved around 1955, and José Basso from 1956 [1][2][3]. Sources differ on when he joined Rotundo [1][3]. In 1977 he recorded 15 tangos with the Orquesta Típica Porteña directed by Raúl Garello, which marked the close of his career [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 17 April 1978 [1].

History

In 1936 Ruiz won a singing contest on Radio Fénix, having entered under a pseudonym [2]. In 1938 he became the singer of José Otero's orchestra under the name Fabián Conde, and in 1939 he recorded the march of Club Platense with that orchestra [1].

In 1942 he sang for the first time under his real name, on Radio Prieto; his father attended the performance and the two reconciled [1].

On 23 July 1943 he joined Alfredo De Angelis, making his first recording, "Marioneta", one of eight sides he recorded with that orchestra [1].

In 1944 he joined Aníbal Troilo's orchestra, replacing Francisco Fiorentino on the recommendation of Alberto Marino; Todo Tango credits him with 31 recordings with Troilo up to 1948 [1]. Other sources document him singing with Troilo on 28 February 1945, during 1945–1946, on 14 June 1946 and on 8 July 1948 [4][5][6][7]. He left Troilo in 1948, which the Rotundo biography places in July of that year [1][3].

He then moved to Francisco Rotundo's orchestra, where he stayed until it dissolved around 1955 and made 25 recordings [1]. Sources differ on when he joined: Todo Tango's biography of Ruiz gives 1948, while Todo Tango's biography of Rotundo gives both October 1948 and 1949 [1][3]. tango.info lists him singing with Rotundo on 14 December 1948 [7].

In 1956 he joined José Basso's orchestra, replacing Rodolfo Galé, and made about 40 recordings with it [2]. In 1977 he recorded 15 tangos with the Orquesta Típica Porteña directed by Raúl Garello, the close of his career [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 17 April 1978 [1].

Floreal Ruiz — described as Floreal Ruiz (Cantor)

Single source

Ruiz, along with Raúl Berón and Goyeneche, is considered one of tango's very best singers, a view Lavocah found echoed in his own research on Todo Tango.

Single source

Floreal Ruiz sang for De Angelis early in 1944 before moving to Troilo later the same year; both bands recorded 'Marionetta' with him, though not in the same year.

Single source

Ruiz lifts the De Angelis orchestra, though his full capacities only really show once he moves to Troilo.

Single source

Ruiz is a great singer in 1945 but his best performances with Troilo are yet to come.

Single source

Lavocah suggests Ruiz would have left a bigger legacy had he stayed with Troilo past 1947, and says singers were better with Troilo than anywhere.
