Jorge Maciel was a tango singer, born on 17 September 1920 [5]. His professional career began around 1940 with a neighbourhood orchestra and continued with Caviello, Zabala, Guillán and Roberto Caló [1].

In 1947 he joined the orchestra of Alfredo Gobbi, which gave him the name Jorge Maciel [1]. His first record with Gobbi, "Remembranza" for RCA Victor, was made on 8 September 1948 and is described as a hit [2][3]. His last recording with Gobbi, "Un regalo de reyes", is dated 26 August 1954 [2].

Also in 1954 he joined the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese alongside Miguel Montero and recorded for Odeon [1]. With Pugliese he toured the Soviet Union and China in 1959, together with the singer Carlos Guido [1]. In 1966 he recorded "Recuerdo" with Pugliese, singing the variation [1].

In 1968 he co-founded Sexteto Tango with Julián Plaza, Osvaldo Ruggiero, Víctor Lavallén, Emilio Balcarce, Oscar Herrero and Alcides Rossi [1]. He died in Buenos Aires on 25 February 1975, during a hernia operation [1]. One article about him is titled "Jorge Maciel, el Caruso del tango" [2].

Jorge Maciel — described as Jorge Maciel (Cantor)

Single source

Maciel sang for years with Alfredo Gobbi's orchestra before moving up to Pugliese's in the 1950s, where he became more dramatic to suit Pugliese's harder, more angular style compared to Gobbi's rounder sound.

Single source

Maciel, whose real name is Carlos Pellegrini, sings with Gobbi in 1949 and joins Pugliese in the mid-1950s; with Gobbi his sound is softer and less dramatic.

Single source

Maciel's first recording was Remembranza with Gobbi in 1948; he later brought the repertoire to Pugliese after Morán left in 1954. With Pugliese he is a dramatic singer with two gears, hold back then wham; with Gobbi he is more modulated and softer.
