Person
Ismael Spitalnik
Ismael Spitalnik (1919–1999) was a tango musician who played in the orchestras of Ángel D'Agostino, Horacio Salgán, Miguel Caló and Osvaldo Pugliese, among others, and later led his own ensembles [1][4][5][6]. Aníbal Troilo recorded Ojos negros in his arrangement, and he is credited as the composer of Bien milonga [2].
Ismael Spitalnik was born on 27 August 1919 [6]. His documented career began in 1939, when he joined Emilio Balcarce's group and, briefly, the Orquesta Típica Nobel [1]. In the 1940s he moved through the orchestras of Ángel D'Agostino, Horacio Salgán and Miguel Caló [1][5].
He also worked as an arranger. In 1948 Aníbal Troilo recorded Ojos negros in his arrangement [2]. By 1952 he was leading his own orchestra, which recorded for RCA Victor [3]. From 1956 he played in Osvaldo Pugliese's orchestra and toured the Soviet Union and China with it [1][4]. Spitalnik died in Ramos Mejía on 12 October 1999 [1].
Early career
In 1939 Spitalnik joined Emilio Balcarce's group and, for a short time, the Orquesta Típica Nobel [1].
In January 1940 he started with Ángel D'Agostino's orchestra, according to a biography of D'Agostino [5]. He left D'Agostino's orchestra in 1943 [1].
In 1944 he was a founding member of Horacio Salgán's first orchestra [1]. In 1945 he moved to Miguel Caló's orchestra [1].
Arranging and own orchestra
In 1948 Aníbal Troilo recorded Ojos negros in Spitalnik's arrangement [2].
On 24 October 1952 Spitalnik's own orchestra recorded the vals Manos adoradas for RCA Victor, with Aldo Calderón as singer [3].
With Osvaldo Pugliese
In 1956 Spitalnik joined Osvaldo Pugliese's orchestra and toured the Soviet Union and China with it [1]. A separate source places his time in Pugliese's orchestra from 1956 to 1971 [4].
Later years
In 1987 Spitalnik toured nine Soviet cities [1]. The source does not say which ensemble he toured with [1].
In 1990 he led a septet with Normando Lázzara on piano [1]. He died in Ramos Mejía on 12 October 1999 [1].
Repertoire
Spitalnik is credited as the composer of Bien milonga . His arrangement of Ojos negros was recorded by Aníbal Troilo in 1948 [2].
