Dancer

Rodolfo Dinzel

Rodolfo Dinzel was a tango dancer and teacher who formed the couple Los Dinzel with Gloria Varo, performed with Tango Argentino in Europe and on Broadway, and later taught in San Telmo and directed a university tango dance programme [1][2][3]. He was born on 7 October 1950 and died on 1 January 2015 [6][5].

Rodolfo Dinzel was a dancer whose career covered stage performance, teaching and dance notation [1][2]. One source gives his date of birth as 7 October 1950 [6], and another records his death on 1 January 2015 [5].

In 1972 he formed the couple Los Dinzel with Gloria Varo, working in Juan Carlos Copes's company, and was contracted for the United States [1]. In the 1980s he taught tango at the Bar Unión in San Telmo and joined the production Tango Argentino for its French and Italian dates [2]. The production's Broadway run at the Mark Hellinger Theatre is recorded under 9 October 1985 [3], and "The Dinzels" received a Tony nomination for Best Choreography in 1986 [3].

He later opened La Academia de los Dinzel in San Telmo in 1988 [2], directed the dance programme at the Universidad del Tango (later CETBA) from 1992 [1], and in 1997 published the Sistema Dinzel, a choreographic notation, with Corregidor [1].

Stage career

According to one biographical source, in 1972 Rodolfo Dinzel formed the couple Los Dinzel with Gloria Varo [1]. The couple worked within Juan Carlos Copes's company, and Dinzel was contracted for the United States that year [1].

In 1984 he joined Tango Argentino on its French and Italian dates [2]. A Broadway run of Tango Argentino at the Mark Hellinger Theatre is recorded under the date 9 October 1985 [3]. In 1986 the production listing credits "The Dinzels" with a Tony nomination for Best Choreography [3]. The dossier records this as a nomination, not an award [3].

Teaching

In 1980 Dinzel taught tango at the Bar Unión in the San Telmo district [2]. In 1988 he opened La Academia de los Dinzel, also in San Telmo [2].

From 1992 he directed the dance programme at the Universidad del Tango, an institution later known as CETBA [1].

Dance notation

In 1997 Dinzel published the Sistema Dinzel, a system of choreographic notation, issued by Corregidor [1]. The available sources do not describe how the system works [1].

Later years

On 14 June 2014 Dinzel and Gloria were interviewed together by Pepa Palazón [4]. He died on 1 January 2015 [5].
