Gotan Project

Gotan Project is the Paris-based trio formed in 1999 by Eduardo Makaroff, Philippe Cohen Solal and Christoph H. Müller. It combines sampled and live tango elements with electronic beats and has released three studio albums that circulated widely outside Argentina.[22][23]

Eduardo Makaroff (Argentina), Philippe Cohen Solal (France) and Christoph H. Müller (Switzerland) began working together in Paris in 1999.[22] Their first release, the single “Vuelvo al Sur / El capitalismo foráneo,” appeared in 2000 and was followed by the album “La Revancha del Tango” in 2001.[22][23] The group’s name reverses the syllables of “tango,” a lunfardo-style word play.[22]

The music draws on classic tango recordings and live bandoneon and string performances while layering contemporary electronic rhythms and samples.[22] Subsequent albums “Lunático” (2006) and “Tango 3.0” (2010) continued the same approach; a DJ-mix compilation, “Inspiración Espiración,” appeared in 2004.[22] Tracks such as “Santa María (del Buen Ayre)” received placement in commercial films, extending the group’s audience beyond specialized tango listeners.[22]

Gotan Project’s commercial success demonstrated that electronically mediated tango could reach international markets that had previously encountered the genre mainly through historical orchestras or Piazzolla’s concert works. The trio’s activity has been intermittent since the early 2010s, yet the three studio albums remain reference points for the electrotango current that developed in the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Formation and method

The collaboration began as a studio project that mixed archival tango material with newly recorded instruments and programmed beats. The resulting texture is neither a conventional orquesta típica nor a purely electronic production.[22]

Albums and reception

“La Revancha del Tango” established the group’s international profile. Later releases refined the balance between live performance and electronic processing while retaining the same core trio.[22][23]
