Uno
Uno is a 1943 tango with music by Mariano Mores and lyrics by Enrique Santos Discépolo, premiered by Tania at the Teatro Astral in April 1943 as part of the revue La revista loca.[1][2] Originally titled Si yo tuviera un corazón after the music was composed around 1940 as Cigarrillos en la oscuridad, the lyrics took nearly three years to complete and the public demand for the piece led to its final name.[1][3]
Uno occupies a central place among the fundamental tangos of Enrique Santos Discépolo, crystallizing a more lyrical vein in his work while retaining the existential weight that defined earlier pieces such as Yira, yira and Cambalache.[1][2] The music was first written by the young pianist Mariano Mores under the provisional title Cigarrillos en la oscuridad and offered to Discépolo for lyrics around 1940; Mores later recounted that months of inquiries produced only assurances that the letter was in progress, until nearly three years later Discépolo presented the finished text.[1][3] The initial title of the completed work was Si yo tuviera un corazón, and it was premiered in April 1943 by the singer Tania at the Teatro Astral in the revue La revista loca.[1][2] Immediate recordings followed by Carlos Roldán with Francisco Canaro, Alberto Marino with Aníbal Troilo on 30 June 1943, Héctor Mauré with Juan D’Arienzo, and Oscar Serpa with Osvaldo Fresedo.[1][4] Public insistence on hearing the number, expressed in shouts of “¡Toquen Uno!”, prompted the change of title by agreement with Discépolo.[1][2] The piece entered the film El fin de la noche (1944) in a performance by Libertad Lamarque and Juan José Míguez, and it has remained a staple of the repertoire across decades, recorded by Troilo, D’Arienzo, Canaro, Fresedo, Goyeneche and later by Luis Miguel on the 1997 album Romances.[1][2][5] Discépolo continued to collaborate with Mores on subsequent works including Cafetín de Buenos Aires (1948), confirming the partnership’s productivity after the long gestation of Uno.[1][2]
Creation and premiere
Mores delivered the melody without a binding commitment, and Discépolo worked on the lyrics amid personal difficulties that included a period of melancholy and isolation in 1943.[6] The premiere by Tania in April 1943 at the Teatro Astral marked the public debut; the title shift from Si yo tuviera un corazón to Uno occurred rapidly because audiences requested it by the first word of the opening line.[1][2]
Early recordings and diffusion
Alberto Marino with Aníbal Troilo recorded the piece on 30 June 1943 for RCA-Victor, one of the earliest commercial versions, while Francisco Canaro with Carlos Roldán had already committed a version on 26 May 1943.[4] Subsequent takes by D’Arienzo, Fresedo and others established the work across the major orchestras of the Golden Age.[1][4]
Legacy
Uno is regularly grouped with Cambalache, Cafetín de Buenos Aires, Yira, yira and Confesión as one of Discépolo’s essential contributions, its melodic line by Mores tempering the harsher tone of the lyricist’s earlier output.[1][2] Later interpretations by Luis Miguel brought the tango to wider Latin American audiences outside the traditional tango circuit.[5]
