Singer

Fernando Díaz

Fernando Díaz (1903–1981) was a tango singer who recorded with the orchestras of Carlos Di Sarli and Francisco Lomuto and with the Orquesta Típica Victor between the early 1930s and the early 1940s.[1][2][12] His longest association was with Lomuto's orchestra, which he joined in 1931 as it began recording for Victor and to which he returned in 1939 before leaving in early 1943.[1][4]

Fernando Díaz was a tango singer whose documented career ran from a stage debut in the late 1920s to the early 1940s.[1] He was born on 14 December 1903, according to a Tangopedia staff record, and died on 11 January 1981.[12][1]

He made his first record, "No tenés perdón de Dios", with Juan Maglio, and sang with the orchestra of Carlos Di Sarli around the turn of the 1930s.[1][2][3] From 1931 he sang with the orchestra of Francisco Lomuto in two separate periods, the first ending in 1935 and the second running from April 1939 to early 1943.[1][4][9] He also recorded with the Orquesta Típica Victor.[1]

A recording catalogue lists sixteen dated recordings on the RCA Victor label sung by Díaz between 1931 and 1942. After leaving Lomuto in early 1943 he later settled in Córdoba province and retired from singing.[1] Sources differ on when his association with Di Sarli began relative to his first recording.[1][2][3]

Early career

Díaz made his debut around 1927–28 at the Teatro Opera with the criollo ensemble of Arturo Grecco.[1] The date of this debut is given only to the year.[1]

His first record, "No tenés perdón de Dios", was made with Juan Maglio and is dated 31 October 1930.[1]

With Carlos Di Sarli

Díaz was one of the vocalists Carlos Di Sarli included on some of his recordings, alongside Santiago Devin and Ernesto Famá.[2] One source dates his association with Di Sarli from 26 November 1928 to 14 August 1931.[2] Another source gives the period as 1928 to 1931.[3]

On 10 January 1931 he recorded "Que Dios la perdone" and "Cachivache" with Di Sarli's sextet.[1]

Sources differ on the start of this association. The Di Sarli sources place it from 1928, while his biography dates his first record, with Juan Maglio, to October 1930 and his recordings with the Di Sarli sextet to January 1931.[1][2][3]

First period with Francisco Lomuto (1931–1935)

In 1931 Díaz joined Francisco Lomuto's orchestra as it began recording for Victor.[1] His first sessions with the orchestra were in duet with Alberto Acuña.[1] Discographic listings also place him with Lomuto in 1931.[4][5] One listing records him with the orchestra on 27 August 1931.[6]

In 1932 he premiered "Aunque parezca mentira" at the Teatro Smart in the Lomuto musical "La vuelta de Miss París".[1] Further dated entries show him with Lomuto on 22 July 1933 and 10 April 1934.[7][8]

His first period with Lomuto ended in 1935.[1][9]

With the Orquesta Típica Victor

On 2 September 1932 Díaz recorded "El beso de Manuelita" and "Humillación" with the Orquesta Típica Victor.[1]

Second period with Francisco Lomuto (1939–1943)

Díaz returned to Lomuto's orchestra in April 1939.[1] During this second period he later sang duets with Jorge Omar.[1] Dated listings show him with Lomuto on 12 August 1940 and 27 June 1941.[10][11]

He left Lomuto in early 1943.[1]

Later life

After leaving Lomuto, Díaz settled in Córdoba province and retired from singing.[1] He died on 11 January 1981.[1]

Recordings

A recording catalogue lists the following dated recordings on the RCA Victor label sung by Díaz:

  • 1931: 24 September, 1 October, 8 October, 4 November and 22 December
  • 1932: 27 June and 29 August
  • 1933: 14 June, 7 July and 22 November
  • 1934: 20 December
  • 1939: 8 September
  • 1940: 11 April and 12 August
  • 1941: 23 June
  • 1942: 17 June

The catalogue entries in the dossier do not give titles, accompanying orchestras or matrix numbers for these recordings. The dates fall within his two periods with Lomuto as given in his biography, 1931–1935 and 1939–1943.[1]

Titles named in his biography include "No tenés perdón de Dios" with Juan Maglio, "Que Dios la perdone" and "Cachivache" with Carlos Di Sarli's sextet, and "El beso de Manuelita" and "Humillación" with the Orquesta Típica Victor.[1]
