Homero Expósito

Homero Aldo Expósito (5 November 1918 – 23 September 1987), nicknamed Mimo, was an Argentine tango lyricist whose literary, often free-verse texts, frequently set by his brother Virgilio Expósito, include Naranjo en flor, Farol, Percal and Yuyo verde. Born in Campana and raised in Zárate, he combined a university literary formation with the popular genre and served for years as treasurer of SADAIC.

Homero Aldo Expósito was born on 5 November 1918 in Campana, Buenos Aires Province, in the house of his maternal grandmother; within a week the family moved to nearby Zárate, where he grew up.[51][52] His father, Manuel Expósito, had been born anonymously in the Casa de Niños Expósitos on Montes de Oca street in Buenos Aires and had adopted the surname as a reminder of that origin; he became a respected merchant and confitero in Zárate and possessed a broad self-acquired culture.[51][53] A younger brother, Virgilio Hugo Expósito, was born in 1924; the two remained lifelong collaborators, Virgilio supplying most of the music.[51][54] Homero attended primary school in Zárate, then the prestigious Colegio San José in Buenos Aires as a boarder, completing his bachillerato in five years. He later entered the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, interrupting and resuming studies according to economic necessity, and acquired a solid grounding in classical and modern literature.[51][55]

His first tango written with Virgilio, Rodando (1938), was premiered by Libertad Lamarque with Mario Maurano’s orchestra but made little impression.[51][56] The brothers’ mature collaboration produced a series of enduring works: Farol and Naranjo en flor (both 1943–1944), Absurdo, Maquillaje, Percal (with Domingo Federico), Yuyo verde, Tristezas de la calle Corrientes, Trenzas (with Armando Pontier), Flor de lino (with Héctor Stamponi) and the late Chau no va más.[51][57] Other notable texts include Te llaman malevo (with Aníbal Troilo), Ese muchacho Troilo (with Enrique Francini) and the waltz Pequeña. Expósito’s style fused the nostalgic romanticism associated with Homero Manzi and the sardonic dramatism of Enrique Santos Discépolo, while introducing freer verse, literary metaphor (sometimes Lorca-inflected) and conceptual density without abandoning the emotional core of the tango.[51][58] A characteristic image—“un arco de violín / clavado en un gorrión”—illustrates the precision and unexpectedness of his language.[51]

In 1945, after the family confitería was sold, he settled permanently in Buenos Aires.[51][59] He became active in SADAIC, serving as treasurer on boards that included Cátulo Castillo, Julio De Caro, José María Contursi and Aníbal Troilo, and participated in the generational renewal led by Homero Manzi that displaced older figures such as Francisco Canaro.[51][60] Internal disagreements later prompted his resignation; he travelled to Spain and France, supporting himself in Paris for a time by copying music for the Opéra. Business ventures—a restaurant in Zárate (El Sibarita) and another in Mar del Plata—failed, reinforcing his return to writing.[51] In 1985 he received a Konex Diploma al Mérito as one of the five outstanding tango authors in Argentine history up to that date.[58] He spent his final years in a central Buenos Aires apartment near SADAIC, increasingly withdrawn. He died on 23 September 1987; friends noted that he departed “sin canción y sin fe,” echoing the fate of the heroine in his own Margo.[51][52]

Expósito’s contribution lies in the successful marriage of high literary ambition with the melodic and emotional conventions of the 1940s tango. The permanent repertoire shared with Virgilio—Naranjo en flor, Farol, Percal, Yuyo verde—demonstrates that free verse, cultivated metaphor and classical allusion could coexist with popular accessibility. His long service to SADAIC and his role in the post-Manzi institutional life of Argentine authors further mark him as a bridging figure between the golden-age lyricists and later generations.

Zárate, education and the brotherly partnership

Raised in Zárate after a Campana birth, Expósito received both a formal secondary education at Colegio San José and a literary university formation that shaped his later diction.[51][55] The lifelong collaboration with Virgilio, six years younger, produced the core catalogue; their first joint tango, Rodando (1938), was modest, but Farol, Naranjo en flor and the Federico collaborations of the mid-1940s established the partnership.[51][56][57]

Style

Critics locate Expósito between Manzi’s elegiac tenderness and Discépolo’s corrosive irony, while noting his freer prosody and literary density.[51][58] Metaphors remain concrete and singable; the emotional situations—nostalgia, betrayal, provincial memory, urban disillusion—stay within the traditional thematic field of the tango even as the verbal surface is renewed.

SADAIC and later life

From the mid-1940s he was a central administrative figure in SADAIC, helping the Manzi-led renewal and later serving as treasurer.[51][60] European travel, unsuccessful commercial ventures and a gradual withdrawal from active authorship characterised the final decades; the 1985 Konex recognition arrived near the end of his life.[58] He died in Buenos Aires on 23 September 1987.
