Venue
Confitería La Giralda
The Montevideo café on the Plaza Independencia where Roberto Firpo's orchestra first played La cumparsita in public, on 19 April 1917.[1]
On 19 April 1917 Roberto Firpo and his orchestra played La cumparsita in public for the first time at the Confitería La Giralda on the Plaza Independencia, a tango by the Montevidean Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, composed as a march for a student carnival comparsa.[1]
The Palacio Salvo, inaugurated on 12 October 1928 on the corner of Avenida 18 de Julio and the Plaza Independencia, stands where the café stood; the site is now the Museo del Tango de Montevideo.[2]
