Octavio Fernández

Octavio Fernández is an Argentine tango dancer, teacher and DJ from Buenos Aires who began training as a teenager under Rodolfo Dinzel and Mauricio Seifert, placed third with Carla Espinoza at the 2007 World Tango Salon Championship, and has performed professionally at Café Tortoni’s Sensaciones de Tango since that year.[1] He has danced with numerous partners including Corina Herrera, Soledad Larretapia, Mariela Sametband, Inés Muzzopappa, Alejandra Gutty, Noelia Hurtado and Carolina Giannini, co-organized the milonga El Yeite and the Yeite Tango Festival in Buenos Aires, and teaches and performs at international festivals while also working as a recognized tango DJ.[1][2]

Octavio Fernández belongs to the generation of Argentine dancers who came of age after the revival of social tango in the 1980s and 1990s and who have carried the dance into an international circuit of festivals, championships and professional shows. He discovered tango as a teenager inside a family environment that already mixed tango, folklore and rock and roll; his early technical formation was guided by Rodolfo Dinzel and Mauricio Seifert.[1] In 2007, partnering Carla Espinoza, he took third place at the World Tango Salon Championship. The same year he joined the cast of Sensaciones de Tango, the resident show at the historic Café Tortoni on Avenida de Mayo, where he has remained an active member.[1]

Two years later, in 2009, he was invited with Corina Herrera to join Miguel Ángel Zotto’s company Tango x2 for a season that included the Latino Americando festival in Milan. Thereafter he has appeared regularly as both performer and teacher at festivals across Europe, the Americas and Asia: Tango en Punta (Uruguay), Santiago Maratón (Chile), the World Tango Championship as juror (Colombia), Edinburgh Tango Festival (Scotland), Ankara Tango Carnaval (Turkey), Tango Malevaje (Denmark), Soul Tango Festival (Korea), and multiple Italian events including Roma, Zucca, Rosso and Apulia.[1] He has also appeared in the Argentine film Fermín, Glorias de Tango and in the music video for the Italian rock band Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti’s song La faccia della Luna.[1]

Fernández’s dance partnerships have been numerous and publicly documented through festival performances and video. In addition to the early collaborations with Carla Espinoza and Corina Herrera, he has danced with Soledad Larretapia, Mariela Sametband, Inés Muzzopappa, Alejandra Gutty, Noelia Hurtado, María Filali, Malika Pitou, Carolina Giannini, Roxana Suárez, Chantal Fernández and others.[1][2][3] Video records show him at El Yeite Tango Club in Buenos Aires with Mariela Sametband (2013) and Alejandra Gutty (2014), in Helsinki with Inés Muzzopappa (2014), in Bucharest with Noelia Hurtado (2019), and more recently on major European stages with Carolina Giannini, including the tanGOTOistanbul festivals of 2024 and 2025 and the Paris Tango Festival.[2][3] His current long-term stage partnership is with Carolina Giannini; together they are described by festival organizers as combining traditional milonguero elements with a contemporary sense of musicality and connection.[1][4]

Beyond performance, Fernández has been active as an organizer and DJ. For several years he co-organized El Yeite, one of the busiest milongas in Buenos Aires, and, together with Lucas Molina Gazcón, Andrés Molina and Martín Bel, the Yeite Tango Festival, a multi-day event that brings teachers, dancers and musicians together for workshops and milongas.[1] He is widely regarded as one of the better-known tango DJs of his generation. He has also lived and taught in Paris, where he has been associated with the École de Tango de Paris and the organization of Paris Tango Festival events, while continuing to travel for residencies and championships.[4][5]

His style is frequently characterized as elegant yet fresh, shaped by extensive social dancing in Buenos Aires milongas and by the dual influence of traditional milongueros and more contemporary masters. Festival biographies emphasize impeccable musicality and a balance between classic floorcraft and modern expressive possibilities.[1] As a living artist he continues to teach, perform and organize, contributing to the transmission of Argentine tango both inside Buenos Aires and on the international festival circuit.

Training and early professional career

The teenage years under Dinzel and Seifert, followed by the 2007 championship result and the permanent engagement at Café Tortoni, established Fernández as a working professional while he was still in his twenties. The 2009 season with Zotto’s Tango x2 marked his first major international company experience.[1]

Partnerships and festival circuit

The succession of partners documented on video and festival programs illustrates both the collaborative nature of contemporary tango and Fernández’s adaptability. Performances with Soledad Larretapia, Mariela Sametband, Inés Muzzopappa, Noelia Hurtado and especially the sustained collaboration with Carolina Giannini have been central to his public profile outside Argentina.[1][2][3]

Organization, DJing and teaching

El Yeite and the Yeite Tango Festival represent his contribution to the social life of tango in Buenos Aires. Parallel teaching residencies and DJ work have extended his influence to students and dancers who may never see him on a championship stage.[1][4]
