Flaco Dany

Flaco Dany (Daniel García, born 8 May 1936 in La Paternal, Buenos Aires – died 10 December 2019) was a leading social tango and milonga dancer, widely regarded as the principal exponent of the milonga con traspié.[1][2] He taught internationally for decades, served on the jury of the Tango World Championship, and was the subject of a dedicated milonga composed by Bebe Ponti and Ariel Prat.[1]

Daniel García, universally known in the tango world as El Flaco Dany, was born on 8 May 1936 in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Paternal.[1][2] (Some later profiles give the year as 1935.)[3] He grew up accompanying his parents to the neighborhood dance halls of the 1940s and 1950s. Those venues, he later recalled, were arranged with the salon proper inside and a confitería outside; there were no tables on the dance floor. As a child of eight or ten he began copying the steps he saw, first following his mother and later observing the leading dancers of the day.[1]

By his late teens he was rehearsing regularly with a group of serious social dancers who reserved Mondays or Wednesdays for practice. Among those present were Carlos Gavito, Juan Carlos Copes, and Carlos Pérez. Formal teachers were rare; knowledge was transmitted by watching and repeating.[1] García never abandoned social dancing. For decades he could be found at classic milongas such as Sunderland and Porteño y Bailarín, always with a young partner and always with the lean, lightly amused presence that earned him the nickname “Flaco.”[1]

The style for which he became internationally famous—the milonga con traspié—originated in practice sessions with his friend Omar Vega. Vega demonstrated a step that looked almost like a stumble; the two men refined it until it became a deliberate, rhythmic feature of the milonga. The result was a playful, grounded, and highly musical way of dancing the faster rhythm that contrasted with the more upright, walking-oriented milonga then common in many salons.[1][4]

Among the partners with whom he is most frequently filmed and remembered are Silvina Valz (also spelled Vals), Luna Palacios, Natacha Poberaj, and Lorena Ermocida.[1][5][6] Additional partnerships documented on video platforms include Anna Zyuzina, Nina Sukhova, Daiana Guspero, Ekaterina Koptelova, and Jesica Hornos, though these are less extensively described in written biographical sources. His long collaboration with Carlos Gavito encouraged him to begin teaching abroad; for many years he divided his time between Buenos Aires and Bucharest.[1][5]

By profession he was a naval engineer who practiced for only one year before dedicating himself entirely to dance. He later joked that had he remained an engineer he would never have known the cultures of the more than eighty countries in which he taught.[7] In 1992 he was consulted by director Martin Brest and actor Al Pacino for the blind-dance sequence in the film Scent of a Woman (Esencia de mujer); he described the work as straightforward and completed in two days.[3] He served for several years on the jury of the Campeonato Mundial de Tango.[5]

A short documentary segment in the film Leyendas del tango danza (produced by The Argentine Tango Society, directed by Daniel Tonelli and Marcelo Turrisi) captured him among the surviving milongueros of his generation.[1] The poet Bebe Ponti, together with guitarist and singer Ariel Prat, composed a milonga that paints him in affectionate detail:

Le dicen el Flaco Dany, / traje blanco, rubio fuego / y en sus pies dos llamaradas / de un candombe arrabalero.[1]

He died on 10 December 2019, the day before the international Día del Tango.[2][8] His recordings and filmed milongas remain reference material for dancers studying the traspié, and his name continues to appear on the programs of festivals that wish to connect students with the living tradition of the Buenos Aires salon of the second half of the twentieth century.[1][5]

Formation in the salons

García’s education was entirely observational. He began at age eight or ten by watching his parents and the leading dancers of the postwar years. Later, in the reserved practice nights that included Gavito, Copes, and Pérez, he absorbed the floorcraft and musicality of the classic milonga without formal instruction.[1] This background gave him an unassailable authority when he later taught the same material abroad.

The milonga con traspié

The defining technical contribution associated with Flaco Dany is the milonga con traspié. Developed with Omar Vega from a step that initially resembled a stumble, the figure became a rhythmic, playful element that allowed the dancer to mark the strong accents of the milonga while remaining inside a close, social embrace.[1][4] It is this style, more than any single partnership, that secured his international reputation.

Teaching and later years

Encouraged by Carlos Gavito, García began touring in the 1990s and spent long periods in Europe, especially Bucharest. He taught in dozens of countries, served on the World Championship jury, and continued to dance socially in Buenos Aires whenever he was home.[1][5] His brief involvement in the choreography of Scent of a Woman is one of the few documented encounters between classic milonguero practice and mainstream cinema.[3]
