Juan Carlos Casas

Juan Carlos Casas (born Basilio Constantino Casas, 23 March 1914 – 21 August 1986) was an Argentine tango singer from Tandil who served as principal vocalist with Pedro Laurenz's orchestra from 1938 to 1942, recording fifteen sides including the celebrated 'Como dos extraños'.[1][2] After leaving the orchestra he toured Latin America and, in 1949, performed in Paris at L'Aiglon and the Moulin Rouge before returning to commercial activities in Argentina.[1][3]

Basilio Constantino Casas was born on 23 March 1914 in Tandil, province of Buenos Aires, and died on 21 August 1986.[1][2] In the tango circles of his hometown he remains the most prominent figure to have reached Buenos Aires and toured extensively while singing Argentine music.[1] Primary-school studies introduced him to basic English and French, languages that later proved useful; family and friends formed his first audience and encouraged his entry into the local Crespi-Lisarrague orchestra.[1]

Military service in the capital allowed him to attend the PAADI (Primera Academia Argentina de Intérpretes) directed by Luis Rubistein at Avenida Callao 420, where student performances were broadcast and contests held.[1] Casas emerged from one such contest and was promptly engaged by the short-lived orchestra of guitarist Horacio Pettorossi before joining the group led by Joaquín Do Reyes.[1] His physical appearance—broad face, mustache, and voluminous hair swept back—suggested a singer of rugged themes, yet his vocal range sat between tenor and baritone and his delivery was delicate, a style that would not have been out of place with Osvaldo Fresedo.[1]

Attention drawn by his appearances on small tango stages led Pedro Laurenz to incorporate him into the recently formed orchestra after Héctor Farrel's departure.[1][4] Casas's first recording, the tango 'Vieja amiga', took place on 12 May 1938 for RCA Victor; the same period also produced the milonga 'Milonga compadre' (15 May 1938).[1][5] In total he recorded fifteen sides with Laurenz between 1938 and 1942: 'No me extraña' and 'De puro guapo' (25 January 1940), 'Desconsuelo' and the vals 'Mascarita' (21 February 1940), 'Como dos extraños' and 'Milonga de mi flor' (28 June 1940), 'Amurado' and 'Improvisando' (29 July 1940), 'Taconeando' and 'Corazón encadenado' (16 June 1942), 'A mí dejame en mi barrio' and 'Chatero de aquel entonces' (20 October 1942), and 'Firuletear de bandoneón' (2 December 1942).[1][5][6] Among these, 'Como dos extraños' (music by Laurenz, lyrics by José María Contursi) became particularly associated with Casas's voice and remains a staple of the Laurenz discography.[5][7]

The following year brought an opportunity to tour Latin America with Juan Canaro's orchestra; Casas left the group during the tour to continue as a soloist, reaching Puerto Rico after stops in Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, and other countries.[1] From there he was drawn to Europe. He settled for a time in Barcelona before arriving in Paris in 1949.[1][3] An engagement at the boîte L'Aiglon generated sufficient popularity to attract the attention of the Moulin Rouge, where he appeared as the South American attraction on bills that included Maurice Chevalier, Lily Pons, and Bing Crosby.[1][3] Upon returning to Argentina he undertook commercial obligations connected with the artistic milieu but ceased professional singing.[1]

Casas's recorded output with Laurenz occupies a distinct place in the orchestra's history. The ensemble, rooted in the De Caro tradition, featured distinctive rhythmic and harmonic traits; Casas's lighter, nuanced delivery complemented the instrumental writing on both danceable tangos and milongas.[4][6] The fifteen sides, concentrated in 1938–1942, constitute the bulk of his documented discography and continue to circulate on reissues.[5][6] While later international work in Paris expanded his profile beyond Argentina, the Laurenz recordings remain the primary evidence of his contribution to the golden-age repertoire.[1][2]

Early years and entry into tango

Born in Tandil in 1914, Casas gained early encouragement from local audiences and the Crespi-Lisarrague orchestra.[1] Military service in Buenos Aires enabled study at the PAADI academy, from which he moved to the Pettorossi and Do Reyes groups before joining Laurenz.[1]

Recordings with Pedro Laurenz

From the first side 'Vieja amiga' on 12 May 1938 through 'Firuletear de bandoneón' on 2 December 1942, Casas cut fifteen titles for RCA Victor, including the milongas 'Milonga compadre' and 'Milonga de mi flor' and the tango 'Como dos extraños'.[1][5] The repertoire suited his intermediate tenor-baritone range and restrained phrasing.[1]

Latin American tour and Paris

After leaving Canaro's touring orchestra he reached Puerto Rico and then Europe, residing briefly in Barcelona before 1949 engagements at L'Aiglon and the Moulin Rouge in Paris, where he shared billing with major international stars.[1][3] Professional singing ended upon his return to Argentina.[1]

Vocal character and reception

Despite a robust appearance, Casas employed a delicate delivery that aligned with more lyrical orchestra styles; his Laurenz sides remain the core of his legacy and are regularly included in anthologies of the orchestra.[1][6]
