Tango and Rosario

Chapter 1 of 3 · 1850–1907

A river port

One of the cities named among tango's possible birthplaces.

Centro

Tango took shape in, and is characteristic of, certain river-port cities of Argentina and Uruguay centred on the Río de la Plata; it extends to other river ports of the region, among which Rosario, in the province of Santa Fe, stands out.1

Several studies try to establish where tango first appeared: some sources say Buenos Aires, others its suburbs, Montevideo, and even Rosario.1 The port cities where tango took shape were the points through which millions of immigrants entered Argentina and Uruguay between 1850 and 1930.1
