Ricardo Malerba

Ricardo Malerba led a tango orchestra that debuted on Radio Belgrano on 1 March 1938.[1] Born on 24 August 1905,[3] he played in Europe from 1927 to the early 1930s, recorded for Odeon from 1941, mostly with singer Orlando Medina,[1][4] and died in Buenos Aires on 29 June 1974.[2]

Ricardo Malerba's orchestra debuted on Radio Belgrano on 1 March 1938. Before that he had worked at the Tabarís cabaret and on Radio La Voz del Aire.[1] His career began earlier with his brothers in Europe. In 1927 they joined Cátulo Castillo's orchestra for a European tour, and they stayed on the continent after the tour ended.[1]

The orchestra played the tango Las cuarenta in the film Confesión in 1940.[2] In 1941 it began recording for Odeon. It made thirty sides for the label through 1945, most of them with Orlando Medina as vocalist.[1][4] In the 1950s Malerba worked in Brazil.[1] He made a further series of recordings for Odeon and Music Hall in 1956 and 1957.[1] Malerba was born on 24 August 1905.[3] He died in Buenos Aires on 29 June 1974 and was buried at Chacarita.[2]

Early career in Europe

In 1927 Ricardo Malerba and his brothers joined Cátulo Castillo's orchestra for a European tour.[1] The tour ended in 1930. The Malerba brothers did not return home and instead played in Portugal.[1]

In 1931 his brother Carlos fell ill in Portugal and died in Bilbao.[1] Ricardo then spent a season in France playing with Bachicha's orchestra.[1]

Formation of the orchestra

After returning to Buenos Aires, Malerba worked at the Tabarís cabaret and on Radio La Voz del Aire.[1] On 1 March 1938 he debuted his own orchestra on Radio Belgrano.[1]

In 1940 the orchestra performed Las cuarenta in the film Confesión.[2]

Singers

Orlando Medina was the main vocalist on the orchestra's first Odeon recordings, made between 1941 and 1945.[1] A dated entry records Medina singing with the orchestra on 5 October 1942.[4]

Recordings

The orchestra's recording career had two phases.[1]

- From 1941 to 1945 it recorded thirty sides for Odeon, mostly with Orlando Medina.[1] - From March 1956 to January 1957 it recorded eight more sides for Odeon.[1] - In 1957 it recorded five sides for Music Hall.[1]

Later career and death

In 1952 Malerba played at the luxury hotels of Porto Alegre and on the city's radio and television. He then made a long tour of Brazil.[1] After his Brazilian period he returned to the studio for the 1956–1957 Odeon and Music Hall sessions.[1]

Malerba died in Buenos Aires on 29 June 1974 and was buried at Chacarita.[2]
