Pablo Ziegler

Pablo Ziegler, born on 2 September 1944, was a pianist, composer and arranger who became Astor Piazzolla's pianist in 1978 and played in Piazzolla's quintet until 1989 [1][4]. In 1990 he founded his own New Tango Quartet [1]. Later recordings associated with him received a Latin Grammy in 2003 and a Grammy in 2018 [1].

Pablo Ziegler was born on 2 September 1944 [4]. His documented professional career began in 1974, when he composed and orchestrated the music for a stage production of Woyzeck, the first of many theatre scores [3].

In 1978 Ziegler became Astor Piazzolla's pianist [1]. During his years with Piazzolla he played with the re-formed Conjunto 9 at the Teatro Colón with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic in 1983 [1], and in 1986 he recorded Tango: Zero Hour with Piazzolla's quintet [1]. His time in the quintet ended in 1989, when Piazzolla stopped performing [1].

In 1990 Ziegler founded his New Tango Quartet [1]. He also worked outside the tango ensemble format, scoring the film Adiós Roberto in 1985 [1] and recording Los Tangueros with Emanuel Ax for Sony in 1996 [1]. The album Bajo Cero won the Latin Grammy for best tango album in 2003 [1], and Jazz Tango won the Grammy for best Latin jazz album in 2018 [1]. In 2019 the Buenos Aires legislature named him a distinguished cultural personality [2].
