Juan Maglio was a bandoneón player and orchestra leader, born on 18 November 1881, who recorded for Columbia from 1912 as the Orquesta Típica Criolla Juan Maglio Pacho [1][3]. His last recording session was for Odeón on 17 April 1934, and he died on 14 July 1934 [1].

Juan Maglio was born on 18 November 1881 [3]. He began bandoneón lessons with Domingo Santa Cruz in 1898 [1]. In 1899 he debuted at the café El Vasco in Barracas, playing in a trio with Julián Urdapilleta and Luciano Ríos [1].

His career, as the sources record it, centred on cafés. These included La Paloma, Garibotto, Ambos Mundos and La Morocha [1]. In 1912 he signed with Columbia and recorded under the name Orquesta Típica Criolla Juan Maglio Pacho [1]. In 1915 he played a December season in Montevideo [2]. In 1920 he organised a new orchestra [1]. In 1934 he made his last radio appearances and his final recordings, for Odeón, before his death that July [1].

History

Maglio began bandoneón lessons with Domingo Santa Cruz in 1898 [1]. The following year, 1899, he debuted at the café El Vasco in Barracas, in a trio with Julián Urdapilleta and Luciano Ríos [1].

Around 1910 he first played at café La Paloma, on Avenida Santa Fe by the Maldonado stream [1]. He then played at café Garibotto, Ambos Mundos and La Morocha [1]. In 1912, back at La Paloma, he signed with Columbia and recorded as the Orquesta Típica Criolla Juan Maglio Pacho [1].

In 1915 he played a December season at the café Au Bon Marché in Montevideo [2]. In 1920 he organised a new orchestra with Rafael Rossi and Nicolás Primiani on bandoneón [1].

In 1934 Maglio made his last appearances on Radio Belgrano [1]. He recorded for the last time on 17 April 1934, for Odeón [1]. He died on 14 July 1934 at his home at Bulnes 948 [1].

Musicians

Maglio's earliest documented group was a trio at the café El Vasco in 1899 [1]. Its other members were Julián Urdapilleta and Luciano Ríos [1].

The orchestra he organised in 1920 included Rafael Rossi and Nicolás Primiani on bandoneón [1]. His own instrument was the bandoneón, which he had studied with Domingo Santa Cruz from 1898 [1].

Recordings

Maglio signed with Columbia in 1912 [1]. The recordings from that contract appeared under the name Orquesta Típica Criolla Juan Maglio Pacho [1]. His last recording session took place on 17 April 1934 for the Odeón label [1].
