Nostalgias
Nostalgias is a tango with music by Juan Carlos Cobián and lyrics by Enrique Cadícamo, composed around 1935–1936 after an earlier version had been rejected for a theatrical tribute to Carlos Gardel.[1][2] The piece was premiered by Cobián’s orchestra with Antonio Rodríguez Lesende at the Charleston and became one of the most recorded works of the repertoire.[1][3]
After the death of Carlos Gardel on 24 June 1935, the theatrical entrepreneur Alberto Ballerini commissioned Enrique Cadícamo to prepare a stage work about the singer’s life, with music by Juan Carlos Cobián. One of the numbers written for that project was rejected because its structure was considered too complex for the refrain; Cobián retained the melody, Cadícamo supplied a new lyric, and the resulting tango was titled Nostalgias.[1][2] The piece was first performed toward the end of 1935 by Cobián’s orchestra with the singer Antonio Rodríguez Lesende at the Charleston on calle Florida.[1][2] Early commercial recordings include Charlo with guitar accompaniment in October 1936, Miguel Caló with Alberto Morel, and Francisco Lomuto with Jorge Omar on 28 October 1936.[1][3] The work entered the permanent repertoire of orchestras ranging from Fresedo and Demare to later ensembles, and it remains a standard both as a vocal tango and in instrumental form. Carlos Gardel never recorded it, since the composition post-dates his death.[1][2]
Origin in a rejected tribute
The melody originated as material for a posthumous stage tribute to Gardel and was discarded by the producer; Cadícamo then wrote the definitive lyric for the retained music.[1][2]
Premiere and early recordings
Premiere took place at the Charleston with Rodríguez Lesende; three commercial versions appeared in October 1936 alone (Charlo, Caló–Morel, Lomuto–Omar).[1][3]
Place in the repertoire
The piece has been recorded by a wide range of orchestras and singers and is frequently cited as an example of Cobián’s more elaborate compositional style.[1][2]
