Raúl Berón
Raúl Berón (30 March 1920 – 28 June 1982) was an Argentine tango singer whose career peaked between 1939 and 1955 with the orchestras of Miguel Caló, Lucio Demare, Francini-Pontier, and Aníbal Troilo.[29][30] Possessing a velvet tenor voice in the Gardelian tradition, he is regarded by many specialists as one of the finest cantores de orquesta of the golden age.[29][31]
Raúl Berón was born on 30 March 1920 in Zárate, a port city on the Paraná River approximately 150 kilometers north of Buenos Aires, into a musical family.[29][30][32] His father, Manuel Berón, was a guitarist and composer; his siblings José, Adolfo, Elba, and Rosa were also singers. As a child Berón performed in a family duo with his older brother José and later in a group called Los Porteñitos.[29][32] He moved to Buenos Aires and worked as a soloist accompanied by guitars on radio stations during the era of live programming.[29][33]
In 1939, at age nineteen, he debuted with Miguel Caló’s orchestra at the Dancing venue.[32][34] The partnership produced some of the most admired recordings of the early 1940s. On 29 April 1942 Berón and Caló recorded “Al compás del corazón” (music by Domingo Federico, lyrics by Homero Expósito) for Odeón; the reverse side was “El vals soñador.”[29][35] “Al compás del corazón” became a major commercial hit and established Berón’s reputation.[29][34] He ultimately recorded twenty-eight titles with Caló, among them “Entre sueños,” “Lejos de Buenos Aires,” “Tristezas de la calle Corrientes,” “Azabache,” “Trasnochando,” “Tú” (1949), and “Mi moro” (1950).[29][35] In 1943 he appeared in the film *Todo un hombre*.[30][32]
Later in 1942 Lucio Demare offered Berón a substantial salary increase, and he left Caló to join Demare’s orchestra.[33] With Demare he recorded notable versions of “El pescante,” “En un rincón,” “Una emoción,” “Qué solo estoy,” “Y siempre igual,” and the waltz “No nos veremos más.”[29][33] One title, originally “Tal vez será mi alcohol,” was censored after the 4 June 1943 coup and reissued as “Tal vez será su voz.”[29]
In 1945 Berón joined the newly formed orchestra of Enrique Francini and Armando Pontier (both from Zárate). The ensemble inaugurated the Tango Bar that year.[29][33] Between 1946 and 1949 he recorded sixteen sides with Francini-Pontier (thirteen as soloist and three in duo), including “Como tú,” “Y dicen que no te quiero,” “Remolino,” and “Uno y uno.”[29][35] His repertoire with this orchestra was more limited than that of co-vocalist Roberto Rufino.[29]
From 1951 to 1955 Berón sang with Aníbal Troilo’s orchestra, recording for the TK label.[29][36] Important titles include “De vuelta al bulín,” “Discepolín” (Homero Manzi’s tribute to Enrique Santos Discépolo), “Ivette,” “Yira yira,” and “Cambalache.”[29][30][36] Sources note that heavy work schedules and technical conditions of the period left some of these recordings with audible vocal fatigue.[29] He left Troilo in 1955 after these sessions and continued primarily as a soloist.[29][30]
In 1952 Berón dubbed the tango vocals of actor Jorge Salcedo in the film *Mi noche triste*.[30][32] He returned to Miguel Caló’s orchestra in 1963, recording “Yo quería ser feliz” and “Porque soy reo” under the arrangements of Argentino Galván.[29] Thereafter he worked as a soloist, toured Latin America, and made occasional reappearances with Caló.[29][30] He died on 28 June 1982.[29][30]
Berón’s voice is consistently described as a tenor of velvet timbre in the clear Gardelian lineage—warm, intimate, and capable of both dramatic and festive material without excess.[29][31][32] He is frequently ranked by specialists among the finest cantores de orquesta, alongside figures such as Floreal Ruiz and Roberto Goyeneche.[29][31] His recordings with Caló, Demare, Francini-Pontier, and Troilo remain central documents of the golden-age orchestral style and continue to be studied and performed.[29][34]
Family background and early career
Born on 30 March 1920 in Zárate to guitarist and composer Manuel Berón, Raúl grew up surrounded by musical siblings.[29][30][32] Childhood performances with brother José and the family group Los Porteñitos preceded his move to Buenos Aires, where he worked as a radio soloist with guitar accompaniment.[29][32][33] José Razzano is said to have taken an interest in the young singer, who admired Carlos Gardel.[32] These early experiences shaped the intimate, Gardelian character of his later style.[29][32]
Years with Miguel Caló (1939–1942 and later returns)
Berón debuted with Miguel Caló at the Dancing in 1939.[32][34] The 29 April 1942 Odeón session that produced “Al compás del corazón” and “El vals soñador” launched his national reputation.[29][35] Over the course of his association he recorded twenty-eight titles with Caló, covering both dramatic and lighter material.[29][35] He returned in 1963 for additional sessions arranged by Argentino Galván.[29] The Caló-Berón partnership is widely regarded as one of the most balanced and musically satisfying of the early 1940s.[29][34]
Demare, Francini-Pontier, and Troilo
After leaving Caló in late 1942, Berón spent 1943 with Lucio Demare, recording “El pescante,” “Una emoción,” “Qué solo estoy,” and others.[29][33] From 1945 he worked with the Francini-Pontier orchestra, cutting sixteen sides through 1949.[29][35] Between 1951 and 1955 he was a featured vocalist with Aníbal Troilo, recording “De vuelta al bulín,” “Discepolín,” and additional titles for TK.[29][36] These successive associations placed him in four of the most important orchestras of the golden age.[29][30]
Style, films, and legacy
Berón’s velvet tenor and restrained expressiveness are repeatedly linked to the Gardelian model.[29][30][31] He appeared on screen in *Todo un hombre* (1943) and provided the tango vocals for Jorge Salcedo in *Mi noche triste* (1952).[30][32] After 1955 he worked mainly as a soloist while retaining the intimate approach that distinguished him from more declamatory singers.[29][32] Specialists continue to rank him among the finest cantores de orquesta; his recordings remain essential documents of the 1940–1955 period.[29][31] He died on 28 June 1982.[29][30]
