Manuel Jovés

Manuel Jovés was a composer credited with the tangos "Patotero sentimental" (1922) and "Buenos Aires" (1923), among other works [3][4][6][7]. He was born on 8 March 1886, settled in Buenos Aires (the year is given differently by sources) and died there in 1927 [1][5][8].

Manuel Jovés was a composer whose recorded birth date is 8 March 1886 [8]. He settled in Buenos Aires, although sources differ on the year: one account gives 1911 and also notes that Todo Tango places his arrival in 1908 [1]. He died in Buenos Aires in 1927 [5].

His credited works include "Una más", written with Antonio Viergol in 1915 [2]; "Patotero sentimental" and "La provinciana", written with Manuel Romero in 1922 [3]; "Loca", written with Viergol in 1922 [3]; and "Buenos Aires" and "Nubes de humo", written with Romero in 1923 [4]. Music credits list him as the composer of "Loca", "Buenos Aires", "Patotero sentimental" and "Nubes de humo" [9].

History

Jovés was born on 8 March 1886 [8]. The dossier sources do not record where he was born or what he did before he came to Buenos Aires [1][8].

The year in which Jovés settled in Buenos Aires is disputed [1]. One source dates his settlement to 1911 and notes that Todo Tango gives 1908 instead [1].

His known writing activity in Buenos Aires ran from at least 1915, when he wrote "Una más" with Antonio Viergol, to 1923, when he wrote "Buenos Aires" and "Nubes de humo" with Manuel Romero [2][4]. Jovés died in Buenos Aires in 1927 [5].

Compositions

The earliest work attributed to Jovés in the dossier is "Una más", which he wrote with Antonio Viergol in 1915 [2].

In 1922 Jovés wrote "Patotero sentimental" and "La provinciana" with Manuel Romero, and "Loca" with Viergol [3]. A separate source also credits him with composing "Patotero sentimental" and dates it to 1922 [7].

In 1923 Jovés wrote "Buenos Aires" and "Nubes de humo" with Romero [4]. Another source credits him with composing "Buenos Aires" and dates it to 1923 [6].

Public music credits list Jovés as the composer of the following works [9]:

- "Loca" [9] - "Buenos Aires" [9] - "Patotero sentimental" [9] - "Nubes de humo" [9]

Collaborators

Two collaborators appear in the sources [2][3][4]. Antonio Viergol worked with Jovés on "Una más" in 1915 and on "Loca" in 1922 [2][3]. Manuel Romero worked with him on "Patotero sentimental" and "La provinciana" in 1922, and on "Buenos Aires" and "Nubes de humo" in 1923 [3][4]. The sources describe these works as written together but do not say who wrote the music and who wrote the words [2][3][4].
