Enrique Díaz

Enrique Díaz (born 21 January 1918, died 5 October 1992) was a tango double bassist who played in Aníbal Troilo's orchestra from 1939 to 1959 and later worked with Astor Piazzolla, Horacio Salgán and the Sexteto Mayor [1][2][5]. In 2000 the Buenos Aires legislature named him tango double bassist of the century [2].

Enrique Díaz was a tango double bassist born on 21 January 1918 [5]. Two of the sources on his life refer to him by the name "Kicho Díaz" in their titles, and one presents him alongside a brother as one of a pair of double bassists [1][2].

His recorded career began by 1935, when he played double bass with José Pascual and Anselmo Aieta [1]. In 1939 he joined Aníbal Troilo's orchestra on the recommendation of his brother David [2]. He stayed with Troilo until 1959, and during those years Troilo and Astor Piazzolla wrote the piece Contrabajeando as a showcase for him [1].

After leaving Troilo, Díaz joined Piazzolla's Quinteto Nuevo Tango in 1960 and formed the Estrellas de Buenos Aires quartet [1]. In 1964 he toured Japan with Horacio Salgán's Quinteto Real and recorded for Columbia [4]. He appeared in Simón Feldman's film Tango argentino in 1969 [2], and in 1985 he performed on Broadway with the Sexteto Mayor in the show Tango Argentino at the Mark Hellinger Theatre [2].
