Orquesta
Astor Piazzolla
Astor Piazzolla's orchestra was led by Astor Piazzolla. [1] Piazzolla launched his own orquesta típica in 1946 and recorded for Odeón with singer Aldo Campoamor. [3][8] He dissolved the orchestra in 1950 and turned to classical study. [4]
The orchestra known as Astor Piazzolla was led by the bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla. [1][8] Its leader was born on 11 March 1921. [7] He had earlier played bandoneón with Aníbal Troilo's orchestra and directed the orchestra accompanying singer Francisco Fiorentino. [2][3]
The orquesta típica was active from 1946 and recorded for Odeón. [3][8] Its singers included Aldo Campoamor and Fontán Luna. [9][10][11] Piazzolla dissolved the orchestra in 1950. [4] He went on to lead other ensembles, including the Octeto Buenos Aires and the Quinteto Nuevo Tango. [5]
Background of the leader
In 1924 Piazzolla's family moved to New York, where he grew up and got his first bandoneón. [2] In 1935 he appeared as a newspaper boy in Carlos Gardel's film El día que me quieras, which was shot in New York. [2]
In 1939 he joined Aníbal Troilo's orchestra as a bandoneonist, at first filling in for an ailing player. [2] On 3 May 1943 Troilo recorded Piazzolla's arrangement of Inspiración for Victor; it was his first recorded arrangement. [2]
In 1944 Piazzolla left Troilo to direct the orchestra accompanying singer Francisco Fiorentino, and they recorded 24 pieces together. [3]
History
Piazzolla launched his own orquesta típica in 1946. [3][8] It recorded for Odeón, with Aldo Campoamor as singer. [3] tango.info lists a recording by the orchestra led by Piazzolla dated 10 April 1948. [6]
In 1950 Piazzolla dissolved the orchestra and turned to classical study. [4] In 1954 he studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. [2]
After returning to Buenos Aires, he formed the Octeto Buenos Aires in 1955. [5] In 1959 he was musical director for the dancers Juan Carlos Copes and María Nieves at the Club Flamboyan in San Juan, Puerto Rico. [5] In 1960 he formed the Quinteto Nuevo Tango in Buenos Aires. [5] In 1965 he played a quintet concert at Philharmonic Hall in New York. [3]
On 4 August 1990 Piazzolla suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in Paris. [5] He died in Buenos Aires on 4 July 1992 and was buried at the Jardín de Paz cemetery in Pilar. [5]
Singers
Aldo Campoamor sang with the orchestra from 1946 to 1948. [9] He is also credited on recordings dated 10 April 1948 and 8 July 1948. [6][11]
Fontán Luna sang with the orchestra in November 1948. [10][11] Sources differ on the date: one gives 25 November 1948 and another 24 November 1948. [10][11]
Recordings
The orquesta típica recorded for the Odeón label. [3] Dated recordings listed for 1948 include 10 April (with Aldo Campoamor), 8 July (with Aldo Campoamor) and late November (with Fontán Luna). [6][10][11]
