Orchestra
Ángel D'Agostino
The orchestra of Ángel D'Agostino was a tango ensemble led by Ángel D'Agostino.[13] It recorded for RCA Victor and appeared on Radio El Mundo from 1940.[1][5] Its first Victor recordings, made with singer Ángel Vargas on 13 November 1940, were 'Muchacho' and 'No aflojés'.[3][9]
The orchestra was led by Ángel D'Agostino.[13] According to Todo Tango, D'Agostino's activity as a musician went back to 1919, when he played in the house orchestra of the Teatro Nacional with Juan D'Arienzo.[2] He formed his first tango-only orchestra in 1934.[1]
After signing with Victor and Radio El Mundo, the orchestra made its first Victor recordings on 13 November 1940, with Ángel Vargas as singer.[1][3][5] Vargas sang with the orchestra until 1946, and his last recording session with it took place on 10 September 1946.[3][7] The orchestra's last recordings were made on 20 May 1963, with Raúl Lavié singing.[3]
History
In 1919 D'Agostino played in the house orchestra of the Teatro Nacional with Juan D'Arienzo.[2] In 1920 he formed an orchestra that played tango and jazz and was hired by the Palais de Glace.[1] In 1925 he joined the Orquesta Típica Paramount, which made its debut at the Paramount cinema.[2] In 1928 he co-led a group with Alfredo Mazzeo on Radio Prieto.[2] In 1930 he played at the opening of the Cine Edix at Corrientes and Callao, with Francisco Fiorentino singing refrains.[2]
In 1934 D'Agostino formed his first orchestra devoted only to tango, with Aníbal Troilo on bandoneon and Alberto Echagüe as singer.[1] In 1935 the orchestra played at the Casanova cabaret and the Teatro Paris.[2]
In 1940 the orchestra was hired by the Victor label and played on Radio El Mundo.[1][5] The line-up changed in the same year: Ismael Spitalnik joined, as did Eduardo Del Piano, while Alfredo Attadia left.[1][6] In 1942 the orchestra played on the radio show Ronda de Ases.[2]
Ángel Vargas left the orchestra after the session of 10 September 1946.[7] Tino García joined in 1946.[7] The orchestra continued to record until 1963.[3] D'Agostino died in Buenos Aires on 16 January 1991.[4]
Singers
Francisco Fiorentino sang refrains with D'Agostino at the opening of the Cine Edix in 1930, and Alberto Echagüe was the singer of his first tango-only orchestra in 1934.[1][2]
Ángel Vargas joined the orchestra in 1940 and sang with it until 1946.[6][7] Recordings with Vargas are documented on 13 November 1940, 24 July 1941, 30 December 1942 and 10 September 1946; the last of these was his final session with the orchestra.[3][9][10][11][12]
Tino García joined the orchestra and sang with it from 1946.[7] Spanish-language Wikipedia dates his recording debut with the orchestra, singing 'Alma de bohemio', to 1947.[4] Raúl Lavié sang on the orchestra's last recordings in 1963.[3]
Recordings
The orchestra recorded for RCA Victor from 1940.[1] Its first Victor recordings, 'Muchacho' and 'No aflojés', were made with Ángel Vargas on 13 November 1940.[3][8][9] Further RCA Victor recordings date from 24 July 1941.[10] Other recordings include 'Alma de bohemio', with Tino García, from 1947.[4] The final recordings were made on 20 May 1963 with Raúl Lavié.[3]
